$27K for the LE Hybrid sounds like a pretty good proposition.  Nice standard features too.

$36,000 for the hybrid model sounds a tad less appetizing..You mention that it's amazingly quiet in the cabin and in a trice add that the tire slap from the rock hard economy tires is intrusive...Huh? There something about Toyotas that I find unappealing..It must be me..they sell like hotcakes..
Thanks for a nicely written article....Jack

I tryed the Camry Hybrid last winter. It's a great car, good handling, confortable, powerfull (specialy for an hybrid) and it sounds like a great quality car. That's excatly the opposite of the Corolla/Matrix duo, the paper made cars. So I really think it's a good deal. But, yes but, it's hard to justify the highest price. With an highest price and an highest interrest rate the hybrid is not there to make you save money. Do the math by your self you'll see. With optimistic numbers you'll save 85$/month on gaz if you drive 20 000km/year. The hybrid cost 95$ more per month. And if you compare with a smaller car, like a paper made Corolla or a more appealing Hyundai Elantra, you'll never get close to save money.

So if you already plan to buy a mid size sedan, Camry-Fusion-Malibu-Accord-Altima-whatever, you may look at the Camry Hybrid and plan to do your part to get that Kyoto target. But don't expect to laught at your step brother with is fuel bill, you will not win.

You may see errors in my writing, I'm from Quebec, but I don't bite. Great article Grant.

exercise the car’s cornering ability and the hard compound low rolling resistance Michelin tires wail as they reach their limits

Grant, is this the very same green TCH XLE that James drove  ???   He was also wailing about the tires.  :)

Did you check the tire pressure?  What was it?

There was a supplementary sent to Canadian dealers instructing them to fill those 17 inch Michelins to 40 psi.  They are rated 51 psi.  The US TCH cars receive Bridgestones; an entirely different tire.

I broke down and took delivery of a 2012 TCH XLE full jam in dark blue.  Tires have 40 psi and I cannot get a peep out of them.

As on the previous Camry Hybrid, Eco mode optimizes throttle response and air conditioning output to prioritize maximum fuel efficiency

You must use ECO mode unless you are robbing a bank.  And B mode is for steep hills only.

My real world experience was not as good – 6.5 L/100 km – employing normal driving behaviour: no excessive speed and no excessive efforts to save fuel. The disparity is quite large

Eco mode should take that down to 6.2    Rural 2 lane @ 100 kph on cruise, rolling hills, stop signs every 6 kms or so, 3 high speed passes, AC on (Owen Sound to Walkerton and back),  5.2

Essentially, opposite what Toyota claims (city being better than highway).  However, this is based on the onboard lie-O-meter.  However, range is an easy 1000 km.

Mileage is not the number one reason to get into the 2012 TCH.  Just the sheer quietness of the thing.  Moving in stop and go in silence.  Starting the vehicle in most instances with zero sound and then driving off.  Fun stuff.  Mileage is the bonus.  On the other hand repair out of warranty could be rather nightmarish.  :rofl2:

PS.  Freight as of August/12 was $1565.

Hey, Steve, where's the Show'n Shine thread with your new TCH? Couldn't find it.
Would be VERY curious to read about the first and lasting impressions from an actual owner of a "full jam" TCH. Congrats on the purchase. Like that dark blue!

Thanks.  I will post tonight in the Show and Shine.  My tint guy was on holiday so it just got tinted yesterday.  Wasn't going in show and shine NAKED.  :D  It really sucked untinted.  One thing you notice on this hybrid is how much the AC effects the drive battery being electronic driven AC.  The tint is gonna be a big help.  I was in it today and it's sunny @26C and it seemed to me the fan was on lower than before at least for the first minute or so.

I'm turning the car over to the wife tomorrow.  It took 2 weeks for the body side moldings to arrive. Just put them on as well.  Nerve racking job that is.  So no way the car was going to her work parking lot without them.

In ECO mode which regulates AC temp and acceleration this what I'm seeing around town.  If it's accurate who knows.  Transport Canada numbers are 4.7l/100 City which is never going to happen.

That would be the 2011 and previous TCHs I would think which are a different car.  I would have never bought one of those.  The 2012 TCH is an entirely revised unit.  Not even close to the previous ones.  Plus less money.

Wife loves it, but the litany of controls and options are way beyond her skill level.  :rofl2:

Did a show and shine.

I think that the pricing on these hybrids are very good. I wonder if the hybrid sonata and optima pricing influenced the camry pricing. Also nice to see two trim levels for the hybrid.

I wonder how switching to 'normal' non-low-rolling resistance tires would influence fuel economy and handling, any thoughts out there?

Mediocre fuel efficiency, comparable with European Diesel car with atart/stop technology!

Sigh...the mileage stated is for the 2012 TCH.  Sheesh....

I'd love to try a hybrid for a few tanks.  We routinely match the Transport Canada numbers on all the cars we've had, and no "hypermiling" or other weird driving techniques.

I doubt it on the Sonata.  The Sonata Hybrid is a regular Sonata with a battery.  Horrible reviews from all the majors.  If anything, it will only punish the brand.

Also nice to see two trim levels for the hybrid.

There are actually 4.  The Base XLE is in Camry land a LE with the convenience package.  Then there is the XLE moonroof/leather package and finally the XLE 7.1 Nav/JBL/heated seat package.

I'll find out in the winter when the Toyos go on.  As for handling; read Chris's supplementary review.  Plus I just know the Michelins in the demo were under inflated.

haha  I thought you were talking about one guy doing 214K.   I'd say 6.0 is pretty fair particularily if it's sitting in traffic in hot weather because that will start the engine.   See what the winter brings when it's defrosting for 10 minutes in the drive and the seats are on.

If your comparing to a 2012 Passat TDi then yes, mileage is worse by probably 20% highway for sure.  But the diesel is SLOW and it's not silent and the maintenance is BIG.  It's a Volkswagen.  :)
