The price difference between the new one and the 2012 model isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison. Mercedes typically loads up last year models to make them a better value and to simplify the number of build combinations.

I like the new look. Good on them for allowing at least 2 decent-sized suitcases with the top down.

I never really get cars like this.  I understand it's for the very rich who just want a good cruising convertable that they can take out on a long trip down the coast or a quick run to the country club with a friend and a couple of pairs of gold clubs.  Personally I just think there are better options for people like the new Porsche 911 convertable or if you want something that you can drive in the winter I'd look at the upcoming Audi RS5 convertable (not sure if that's coming to NA to be honest).

But with this competing with the BMW 6 series I think they did a fairly good job and pretty hard to go wrong with either.  Only other vehicle that I think competes with them is the Jag convertable (most others are either a lot more or more on the sport side than comfort).

This car seems to border on overkill (bordering on once AMG territory), but I guess it's for a different snack bracket. At what point do Maserati's make sense ? Nice car but still exudes an older demographic behind the wheel.

Nice set of wheels for it's niche market, but way out of my and most others price range.  I'd like to say it's a bit excessive for my modest tastes anyway, even if I could afford it, but money does strange things to people.

if i could get the upgraded mechanicals + the upgraded interior, in the bodystyle of the previous gen SL then i would be happy. Everything about this design (except for the rear because frankly it has not changed much) has been seemingly executed to be a plus-sized SLK. I understand MB wants to have a strong, instantly-recognizable corporate styling theme like their #1 rival, but a nameplate as iconic as the SL could have gotten away with crazy styling...this is somewhat boring dare i say.

the inside however i am a huge fan of. the previous gen's interior was also nicely styled (never sat in one so can't talk about how all those materials were screwed together), but was really starting to become dated. With the new one MB has taken the overall shape of the previous interior and somehow modernized it while simultaneously evoking cues from their cars from decades past.

If this vehicle does, in fact, attract an older demographic, will they remember that AIRSCARF exists in their car? Will they care that the top can go from transparent to opaque at the push of a button? Will any non-AMG version ever see a track once under ownership? Hell will any of the non-DTM models ever see a track. should have invested a majority of the tech budget into designing a really really good massage seat.

This niche was created by Mercedes with the SL.  There are rich folks that want a smooth roadster that is luxurious and fast enough, but don't want stiff suspensions or cramped interiors on their GT-style trips.  When I attended MBCA events on the coast (Albertans aren't as spendy on their cars...) I noticed that most SL owners drove their cars quite a bit, but also had some sort of more-sporting car tucked away somewhere.

One member from Edmonton had a 911C4S as his sporting ride, his wife had an SL, and they had some big SUV's as their winter rides.  They didn't see the SL and 911 as direct competitors, but instead as wanting one of each.

I'd buy an SL if I had the budget to also have a GT-R...

...could have gotten away with crazy styling...

Do you actually think Benz buyers go for 'crazy styling'?

As for demographics, here's what Inside Line has to say, "According to the company, SL buyers are also, on average, 56 years old, predominantly male (84 percent), college graduates (77 percent), married (75 percent) and earn an average household income of $516,000 per year. Up to 40 percent of these buyers opt for an AMG version."

Yeah in retrospect "crazy" may not be the best word. I just believed (prior to release/official photos) that the route this generation of the SL was going to take styling-wise would be based more on the SLS, as opposed to drawing cues from lower ends of their product portfolio (the slk). As for the demograpics, honestly not surprised.

These are the ultimate muscle cars. I love the burble on a V8 Merc, Id love one for a nice sunny day cruise.....plus anything with this much power cant help itself but be a good time. The AMG SLs would be a great time.
Lighten up Francis.....

I'm probably biased but I am with you here. The old SL, especially pre-facelift had something very nice and alluring about the design.

This one just looks like a big version of a car that has a 4cyl in the base model. Not distinctive enough. Given the pedigree of the SL nameplate and its position as a close-to-range-topping model its a bit of a downer.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

I drove an SLK55 AMG a few times.  Loved it.  That would be the one I'd pick, since it's not too obscenely expensive to buy....
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Yeah there's an SLK55 on my street and on occasion I wonder if I bought the wrong Merc.

Or the wrong roadster. There's also a guy with a Z4MC. Curses!

The SLK55 AMG is a rocket.  I guess you'd know if you've driven one.  Special car IMO.  And while it's no SL....it is at least affordable and offers outstanding performance.

The CLK550 is a much better vehicle.

But the SLK 55 has growler quad pipes. Dilemmas.
