Hmmmm   VAG already has a crossover that 'slots in above the Touareg'.  It is called a Q7 and is made by Audi.  Why bother to make another one.

a VW branded Q7 which would cost slightly less than a Q7
Is the VAG group trying to replicate the GM structure of "same cars" under various nameplates?

but isn't Toureg already pretty much the same size as Q7?  i think Q7 is only slightly longer.

they would be going for a slim market there...

I'm not 100% sure but the Toureg only seats 5.

Visually the Q7 is bigger than the Touareg and has 3 rows rather than 2.

Why are we talking about Touaregs and Q7s? It's pretty clear that this new crossover is aiming at the Highlander/Pathfinder/Lambda triplets market.

I thought that's where the Touareg was aimed except for the ridiculous pricing.

You thought a two row fairly rugged and capable $50k SUV was aimed at the three row crossover market where prices start around $30k?

IIRC when the Touareg first appeared it was a Porsche Cayenne under the skin and was priced accordingly.  Now it has strayed ( been pushed) away from that.

The 3rd row on the Highlander was always more theoretical than practical, and nobody looks to VW for an off-roader, so yeah.

To be fair though, the third rows in most of these vehicles theoretically fit adults but in reality are suitable only for small children. Even the relatively massive Q7 has a pretty small third row. Worst offender has to be the Range Rover Sport though; not sure I'd subject even my 45 pound dog to that experience.

Spoiler alert: The Durango won followed by the Highlander.

I'd pick a Durango over any of those 3 seat units as well.  Even though it is a Fiaslodge.

My BIL has a new Durango....I would drive one first before making that call. It is not well done based on my quick test IMO.

Fit, finish, design, and ergonomics. The Grand Cherokee is sooooooo much better IMO

Hopefully some of that trickles over to the Durango for it's mid-cycle refresh.

The Durango just had a mid-cycle refresh for '14.
