You may want to put it in Park ...
« on: July 03, 2015, 10:34:49 pm »
... next time you reach for that parking ticket.

Last week a friend's mother was entering an underground parkade in her Infiniti M35 when she stopped and reached for the ticket. She dropped it on the ground. So she opened her door to pick it up off the ground. As she did this, her foot came off the brake and as she tried to hit the brake again her foot got twisted up and she managed to floor the accelerator. She proceed down the entry ramp at full throttle while she flailed away hanging out the open door. Her progress was stopped when she smashed into a concrete wall. Broken ribs, concussion, fractured vertebra, severe bruising, major embarrassment.

Ouch! Sounds like she will survive though and recover?

I have made this mistake once, years ago, minus the part about stomping on the accelerator (I think I managed to get my foot back on the brake but I was hanging off the steering wheel). My friend in the passenger seat was just laughing at me instead of helping. That jerk! ;D

EDIT: in my case wasn't to reach for something but we were waiting for some other people for a while and I went to go see what was up. Forgot I had already put the car in drive.

Bad news.

Hey, the dopey Mercedes electronic shifter would have put the car in park when the door was opened. It surely was designed for exactly that kind of misadventure.

If that was an Audi or a Toyota, you could start a class action.

My Jeep Cherokee applies the park brake when a door is opened and the vehicle is in gear.

She is expected to make a full recovery. No permanent damage.

It's amazing how many people say, "I've done something similar" when I tell them the story.

Funny story, yesterday, I picked up my daughter and a friend, when I pulled in the driveway, they were telling me something, as they started to get out of the car, it started rolling, I hadn't put it in park yet, but had shutoff the engine.  I was still in my seat, and it only moved an inch, but I immediately thought of this thread.
