Rogue Replacement
« on: March 04, 2015, 02:34:42 pm »
It looks like this spring it will be time for my daughter's 08 Rogue to go. The idea is to sell it here this spring and find a replacement in the Vancouver area sometime this summer. (Looks like it may be UBC for Grad school)  How does it work with used cars in BC?.....GST and PST or just the one tax?

The plan is to look for a decent 2012 or 2013 with under 50-60K on the clock. Budget is about 20-22K plus tax. Her preference is another CUV-ish type vehicle with AWD although a AWD hatch would work. Urban use with occasional weekend runs to Whistler and maybe Kelowna.

Thoughts.......

XV Crosstrek? Forester?

Those would be my choices, although that's heavily due to my manual transmission preference.

Could also get a CX-5 for that price.

If going hatch then Impreza might be your only option.

I'd agree but I think it's unlikely to find a Forester in the age and mileage range at my price point.

As for the CrossTrek......Have they have been around long enough for there to be many on the used market?

Why get rid of the Rogue?  I'm assuming it's paid off, and 2008 isn't so old that you should be having mechanical problems with it, so what is your reasoning for replacing it?  I would say that maybe it doesn't meet your requirements, but looking at the vehicles you're looking at replacing it with, that's probably not the issue (unless the Rogue is a FWD model).

My point is, if you have a vehicle that is (assuming) paid off and is meeting your needs (again, assumption) why would you take on more debt load just for the sake of getting a newer vehicle.  Especially when it's for your daughter who will likely have tons of student debt to deal with.  Is it not better to just take the money you would spend on a vehicle for her and put it towards her student loans?

Well, the replacement will be bought in Vancouver, so I'm guessing a move is a part of it.

Ship it? Cars are worth more on the West Coast anyway.

More than Ontario anyway.  I bet the pricing on both coasts pretty similar.

Exactly. Great excuse to do a coast-to-coast road trip.

:iagree:  Big regret for me.  Wish I would have done that when  I was younger, no kids.  Trying to encourage my cousin to do this, as he will be laid off from Target soon, before looking for another PT job, take a good trip...

But at least it's something I can still do...just have to wait a bit...

She did the coast to coast thing last summer when her boy friend moved out to go to UBC and took his car. I think it is a case of "that was a neat thing to do but once was enough". She is also moving with her cat and after driving the 4.5 hours between NB and NS with the baby a couple of times I couldn't  imagine 5 days +.  Miss Cat does NOT like cars!  ::)  Far better to drug her for the 6 hour flight.

The Rogue will be 8 on the next birthday and is around 140K. I know some will disagree but for my own peace of mind I'd like to see her in something a little newer.

To each their own.  My Odyssey is 10 years old with only 192k.  And I am the 3rd owner!  But I have also sold 2 vehicles at around 100k, due to different needs in the family at the time.

How much space does she need?  What about the upcoming smaller CUVs, like the HRV, CX-3, Encore, RVR.

I agree...fact is a newer car will come equipped with the latest safety features and it just might make the difference between live x die.

A car from 1988 sure.  2008, I'm not so convinced.

Still, if the means are there, why not?
