Test Drive: 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC Navi
« on: July 11, 2013, 06:31:16 am »

The top trim Outlander for 2014 has a sweet V6, a classier cabin, a sophisticated AWD system, and new safety features that can save your life.  We liked it.

Personally, I prefer the old one, may consider the old one or a V6 Equinox if I ever needed an SUV, but doubt that will happen.

Good on Mitsubishi to continue to offer a 6 speed auto, and a V6.  Maybe its early in the morning, but the article just feels a bit like a first drive/summary.  It doesn't say how it handles, how the brakes before, noise levels.  It says the gas consumption is as good as V6 and turbo 4 competitors, but then gets a 3/5?  I wish them luck, always had a soft sport for the underdog...

Maybe the 4 cyl has been tested somewhere and in this lower price range it might be ok. Anyway I had a ride home in a new 4 cyl Dodge Journey the other day and have to say it seemed pretty good to me. This Outlander has some very nice view points mostly from 3/4 rear. The front seems a bit homely I thought; but then photographs have difficulty in depicting face on appearance well and who cares. It's different and likeable in it's own way...not a gaping goop trying to slurp your soup. The ride...well the Journey seemed fine to me so this one probably would be also. Cabin noise on the highway is very important, in my book anyway. Have not ridden in an SUV before the Journey and the Caravan does not seem to count and is quite different ride wise to the Journey. More like the old Boat era with tighter stearing.
Prices like the others...ok...how many outlets do they have across the country? This feature being important when travelling. This vehicle seems very nice anyway.

I don't see any relevance between the Outlander and Journey.  Just because the ride in the Journey is ok, maybe the ride in the Outlander is more engaging?

Kia Sorento should be added to the competitor list for the V6 model, not the sportage.  Tucson doesn't really belong there, either.

I think this CUV would look better in darker colour, to highlight the silver strip going across the back.

I am a fan of Mitsubishi vehicles and this little CUV is a great entrant into the CUV battlefield. Its good looking, I really like the interior and a V6 will be more reliable and fuel efficient than a turbo 4 cylinder. Also the AWD system on this is far superior than the cheesy slip and grip on the CRV. Good on ya Mitsu!! Now, bring me the new Pajero  ;D
Lighten up Francis.....

"Mitsubishi’s V6 gets better fuel economy than many of its turbocharged four-cylinder competitors."

Sounds like the older Rav4 which got better fuel economy in it's 6 cyl format than the 4 cyl competitors at the time.

Strained, forced induction 4 bangers will always consume more period. Because of their lack of torque, the engines are always on boost whether starting from a light or accelerating to keep up with traffic. I like them....but this whole turbo 4= awesome fuel mileage is BS at best.

Good and thorough review. Sounds like the Outlander is decent...or better. Woefully uninspired design though, looks like the designers were ashamed about Mitsu based on their front end design. Odd too because they had something going with the previous corporate snout.

There are so many other compelling choices in this segment, I couldn't imagine picking this above the others.

I agree, the Mitsu death spiral in North America accelerates.

+1.  Aren't they very close to shutting down just like Suzuki?

They are in trouble in NA and their new products are pretty lackluster. I can't imagine them holding out much longer.

my friend has a 2010 which was pretty nice.
it was his choice to go against my V6 RAV at the time.

I think the 2013 is the final year this thing looked alright.  The new model has zero character.

Agreed, the previous model looked great. When they first came out I thought they were the best of the smaller SUVs.

I love the utility and styling of the outgoing Outlander but the interior is terrible.

Huge improvement in the interior department with the new Outlander, if they managed to keep the utility as well, I can get over the styling.

(Of course he can, he drives a freaking smiley faced Mazda 3)

Yup.  The only time they will be better for fuel economy is in heavy traffic than their V6 counterparts.  The problem is that they have to be in boost to accelerate reasonably well no matter what.

It would almost be better if they did a 2.5L 4 banger with good torque in naturally aspirated format, and then boost that engine.  This is, in my opinion, the correct way to do a turbo motor.  On an average hill, it should almost not have to dip into boost to maintain speed.  Probably get better fuel economy too than these 1.6 & 2.0 turbos they are putting in CUVs such as the Escape or Sante Fe.
