Nah.   That would void the warranty on the device.   I'd have to make a 20 foot cord too.

Installing an outlet will cost me $5 for a box and receptacle and 20 min to tap into the current plug in the attic.

  Had to go into my warehouse this morning to pick up a parcel and noticed all the garage doors there including our radio shop have jackshaft openers.  All heavy duty belt-drive units. If I ever have to buy a new unit it will be a jackshaft as it frees up so much ceiling space.  Then again if a $20 gear can get me another 15 years that would be fine.

Nice! I wish I could have a Jackshaft opener. Not enough space between my door and the wall :(

My next major project may be to build a heated work shop so I can have a place to do my woodworking and electronics projects without needing to shuffle stuff around the garage every time.  It would free up a lot of space and declutter the garage as well.

Really?  This thing is smaller than I thought.  Can't be more than 6 inches thick can be installed on either side.

Bought the receptacle last night and box and cover.  $4.73 and I should be good to go now.  Maybe I'll do it tomorrow if it's not too cold.

When I had the garage door people came to modify my door I was told they needed 8-inches from the door to the wall for a jackshft, turns out I've got like 6 inches. I *might* have been able to squeeze one in there, but I was able to save some $$ and modify the overhead opener to work, so I am not gunna mess with it now.

Yup.  I had my operate moved right to the top.  Back when I did it, everyplace I called suggested I stay away from the jackshaft operators.  I guess the residential ones were fairly prone to failure.  That was also 5 years ago.

Plug installed.   My ISF homelink works with the opener but my LX570 the opener doesn't work.   Oh well.   I'll Park isf on that side I guess.

That side has more room so was going to put there.

So for those of you always complaining you can't get two cars in your garage and a lift isn't an option either. Here is your solution!!

So you'd have to remember to open your window before getting out. And of course, we'd have it on the opposite side (since LHD). I'd be worried about breaking something/putting too much pressure on the door, but that's probably unfounded.

It's definitely a cool solution for people with single-door garages and a width problem - I don't think I've seen many two car garages with an issue with respect to width here though.

That seems like a solution for a problem that shouldn't exist.  If you need two cars in a garage, buy a house with a two car garage.

A lot of builders build 18' wide garages which are tight, but if you can get it closer to the wall it would help.

Wouldn't be an issue pulling on the door.

I have a 16 foot door two car garage.  I can't just pull in straight with my truck and the CR-V.  However, all we do is angle to the outside as we pull in and there are no issues with opening doors, etc.  Garage is 22x24'

Not sue how well it would work in our winters with salty water and crud dripping on to the mechanism.  I'm sure it would freeze up quite often and probably limit its lifespan due to corrosion. Just glad I don't need one.  :)

I noticed in the VID that the garage has big bars on the windows.  Must be in south Africa.  :rofl2:

For use on a daily basis it looks pretty useless unless the car absolutely can not be left outdoors.  For seasonal storage dolleys are the answer.

This thread needs a lift! I wish I had a lift in the garage like some members here but I'd probably have to cut the concrete pad and reinforce it etc. There was an excellent thread on garagejournal on how to do it properly (strength of concrete required, how to key it in to the existing pad etc.) but I can't find it...

Found it: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263351

Back to mine, I am finally getting around to painting the garage floor. I've got about 2/3 done now, maybe 3/4 ? I have to do the little "workshop nook" in the back left corner. I had wanted to do porcelain tiles (outdoor/frost rated, high coefficient of friction when wet etc.) but I've neither the experience tiling nor the $ to pay someone else to do it; furthermore the garage is 1/2 full of stuff and a professional might want me to clear it out so they could do all of the work in one or two stages, which would be another PITA. Also, tiles individually are not expensive, but there's ~376 sq ft of floor to do so the cost for the approved tiles/thin set/flex-additive adds up quickly. So, cheap floor paint it is. I know it's going to lift/peel, so I'll just re-paint as necessary.

I wish I would've taken some fresh pictures of when we first got possession of the house, but there's none, or I just cannot find them on this computer. I have one picture without the storage shelf in the back right corner. First time building something like that, I should've taken pictures since I did it wrong and those in the know would probably shake their head  :D It looks like it's free-standing but it's tied into the wall studs quite securely, and it can't tip forward as it fits so tightly into the corner the top of the vertical's won't budge. I used plenty of angle brackets and wood screws.

 Pics:
No storage shelf:

Floor 2/3 done? 3/4 done?

To do list:
1. Clean and paint the remaining floor.
2. Paint the steps leading up to the door.
3. Install overhead cabinets and storage in the back left corner.
4. Paint the vertical foundation walls that run the perimeter of the garage.
5. Install at least two more fluorescent lights, over on the left side of the garage.
6. Install a shed in the back yard and get the tire racks and winter tires out, along with the snowblower.
7. Pondering a highlight stripe around the perimeter but I'm no painter and it might turn out terrible  :rofl2:
8. Perhaps replace the "tables" in the back left corner too, they're actually a Canadian Tire modular shelf system that isn't really stable.

Hallowe'en is coming soon so instead of taking down the spider I'll just leave it up...
