I think he should take it, but I would like the price to come down to at least $40,750 before I think it's worth it.

..and even then, it's only because of the ECP and winter rims "thrown" in.

Do you know the specifics of the winter wheel and tire package?

Even  at that price the discount is only $1750 or a mere $500 more than I got off of my brand new GTI.

Presumably it is being financed as a new car? I think VW is offering 3.9% on the GTI now – not great, but better than the 5.9% they wanted when I leased mine.
1.9% for up to 60 months.

He really liked his old GLI (2003), and hence his desire for the GTI (the MKVII platform over the GLI's older PX35). I think the ECP is attractive to him, and that's the issue here. A new GTI is about $38,500ish, and when he considers adding just winter rims/tires, he sees it as the same price, but without the $3,400 "value" ECP. I told him that amount banked is quite the gamble for "expected" repairs.

According to VW web site 1.9% is only up to 48 months. 60 months is 2.9%.

Also, according to VW web site, MSRP for 2015 GTI Autobahn w/ DSG is $35900 not 38500ish.

NoTo, I'm late to this thread but if your buddy is still looking, has he considered a used volvo S60? I think they're quietly one of the best luxury/sport values out there. My own folks have gone through 4 different, lightly-used s60/s80's over the past 15 years, 2 of them dealer demos, 2 off-leases, and swear by them. I know Volvo doesn't evoke "sporty" as well as a GTI or GLI, but they're actually great-driving cars - even the big FWD S80 3.2.

He got the demo 2015 GTI Autobahn + leather package, with 96 month ECP and 18" winter alloys and tires, for $40,000 all-in, on-the-road.

It's the charcoal colour and is apparently in good shape.  They're replacing the brakes and the winter tires are new, and he gets free maintenance for 3.5 years.  Not horrid.

It didn't.  I told him to use the consumables as a bargaining tool against it being a 'demo' and for it being classified as a 'used' car.

The dealer came back and said "I'll throw in free brake pads now, an oil change, replace all filters, and it'll be just like new.  Though I can't do anything about the wear on the tires, there's still 9/32" left."

He was sold on that basis.

Ah yes, the old "I don't really care if it benefits me as long as it costs the dealer money" negotiating technique.
