I have a cheap ($129) GoPro Hero.   Just got it in January, life has been pretty boring on the road since, at least with the film rolling.  Battery life isn't great on it TBH.

If you already have a late-generation iPod Touch and don't want to spend more money, there's an app for that. It's called CarCamApp - what else? - it's free and it actually works fairly well. It's nowhere near as convenient as a dedicated dashcam in that you have to turn the iPod on each time and open the app, not to mention that it's not a great idea to leave it in the car. There are some other minor glitches, but you get what you pay for. Did I mention that it's free?

Ebay for "mini dash cam". They start at 30 bucks, no screen at that price and I don;t need it. I have no idea if these cams are any good...

Yup. Did you read the link? It's more of a black box given it has GPS and map tracking/speed tracking functionality.

Bob...look into a Mobius.  Very small, inexpensive (in the US anyways) and dead simple to use.  Know a guy who got rid of his GoPro for a Mobius.

Looks like the Contour Roam 2 and the Mobius are both good.  Although the Contour is water resistant, which is a plus.

I also want to be able to use this on other things like when MTB'ing, so I don't want anything specifically for a car.

I tried my Contour roam for a while, it worked but the disadvantage (as with all action cams) was no automatic on/off with ignition, and no looping of the memory card.

Went to a G1W dedicated car cam which has been working great.

The a silicon cover you can get for the Mobius making it water proof.

Ok, serious question, but what are some of the reasons for purchasing a dashcam. Is it just to have a record in the event of an accident? Or is this mostly a toy thing. Seems like it could just be one more reason for someone to break into a car.

and it's because there's so much fraud over accidents in ontario.

I've been driving cautiously and defensively but even that doesn't stop ppl from cutting into my lane with no turn signal or blind spot checks. I imagine it's difficult to prove who was in the wrong and right should two cars brush side by side, no way to prove who was changing lanes. TO is getting terrible for driving.
