It is good that this thread comes up when young NoTo and his expensive lady are away....

She's not expensive she's just into nice things!
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

these guys make brilliant jewelry and you don't have to get a diamond.  if you check the one of a kind section you can see some of their custom work.  http://annesportun.com/collections/engagement-ring

I actually know Anne and her husband. She also did the Mrs' ring.

We just decided one august that we should get married finally, picked dec22 as a logical date.  I would never buy a ring without letting her pick it out, so that's what we did.  (And she bought me a Rado watch in return).

She probably brought it up, but it was just an evolution in our relationship.

Damn man, you're a hopeless romantic!

Also, thanks for making this thread. I, too, am in the same position as the OP. I have nothing to add, but I will be reading intently.

My wife and I were dating for 3 months and lived 6 hours apart by road in Northern Manitoba. I was in Flin Flon and she was in Leaf Rapids. We were having a conversation in my double wide trailer and marriage come up as the next logical step in our relatioship. HBM&S would not transfer her to Flin Flon so she had to quit her Job. We had the wedding in our double wide trailer and we only went though the process to appease others. We pick Monday February 14'th as the date hoping only few people would show up. I got a ring just for the ceremony, it never come up until a week before as we thought it would be a good idea. I knew in about 5 weeks she was the one for me.

My daughter has the right attitude: "It's just a stupid shiny rock that has no real value at all.  If my potential husband thought to buy me such a thing, then it wold prove he didn't really know me."

We got married when we were young and totally poor. I'd do it all again.  :D

We didn't have money for proper rings. We bought two simple bands, but we got what we really wanted later. Two thick bands in 18 karat gold from Birks. I wanted a two-tone, yellow and white, with engravings (which had to be made per order), and he wanted a solid yellow gold one. So that's what we got after 5 years.

Yes, we can afford a lot more now... We might do something for our 25th anniversary (3 years away), but honestly, I really like the symbolism of the bands that we had to work hard to get. And they were the ones we really wanted. :)

IMHO, it just has to have real meaning and joy for the two of you. :)

That's the way it should be done.   But hallmark/commercialization says otherwise.

My wife is pretty picky so I took her ring shopping. Kept the popping the question time secret but she already knew it was coming. Worked out great. Well except for her becoming allergic to the platinum/silver/white gold/whatever accent bit on her ring a few years later. Had to replace that one with another that she mostly picked out.

I'm thinking an inexpensive tungsten carbide ring for me, not into jewlery.

I have a titanium wedding band. Cheap, light and has held up well. Sort of a geeky material too. No diamonds for me.

I have a titanium wedding band.

Me too.

Cheap, light and has held up well.

That's why I chose it - the same qualities as me!

I suppose it looks different from the outside (of marriage). We've been married 25 years now and way back I bought as much ring as could afford...I think I paid $3,500. My wife (fiancé) was thrilled but I bet neither she nor I have mentioned her ring for...probably 15 years or more...we talk about other things.

If I had to do it over I'd avoid the large, expensive diamond pursuit and maybe go for something interesting and custom made and matching...wedding bands, no engagement ring.

Looking back I'd say that if you find yourself obsessing about an engagement ring, you are focusing on the wrong thing.

We're 32 years in, and I completely agree.  Marriage is wonderful and hard work at the same time - we too haven't talked about her ring in, well, forever.  She does have my grandmother's band, which I loved giving her since it's a family thing - and it's not worth much.

My paternal grandparents were married for nearly 80 years and their marriage wasn't based on some single event (wedding day) or piece of jewelry.
