'Cause I had to uninstall the rear shock I installed three days ago because it's in the way of tightening the caliper bolts. D'oh!

Another example of German engineering, eh?   :rofl2:

Fine work...looking good!

Well, to be fair, if the car was on a hoist you could probably get a long enough wrench on there and just point it to the floor. But on jack stands, there just isn't enough clearance, so the wrench has to point out the back - where the shock is.

And if I'd been paying attention when I took everything apart, I would have realized this and not put the shock back on until the brakes were done. Oops.

It's just not you.   ;D

Shocks, brakes and tires ..... always very satisfying in contrast to rads, head gaskets et al.  :P

It's just a poor design when you have to remove suspension components to do brakes.

That's why I think German engineers work for Subaru.   ;D  Had to remove the brake line to replace the shock..... ::)

^^ Ok, just to be perfectly clear, I should have said caliper carrier bolts.

I had to take the caliper carrier off to change the rotor, and those are big-a$$ bolts that are kind of in an awkward position. But if you just need to remove the caliper (to change pads, lube the slider, etc.), there's plenty of room to get in there with a wrench without removing anything else.

Hey Heli.  Does the gti come wirh solid rotors on the back too?

I check the rotors when I switched the tires on the VW and rotors look OK at 140k on the odo..I was going to just to the pads anyway but if ita pain to undo caliper carriers it seals it for me..

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

Yes, solid rotors on the back of the GTI.

Brakes on the GTI were actually fine at 90,000 kms - still lots of pad left and rotors seemed ok (if a bit rusty). But the brakes have always been just mediocre, so I took this as as opportunity to upgrade a bit.

Yes, caliper carriers are a PITA to remove, but not sure I'd want to put new pads on 140,000 km-old rotors? Best just to bite the bullet and go all the way, IMHO.

Can't stand the rusty rotors, so even if there ok at 70k, I always change rotors and pads.  It's not that much more money...

Got the brakes on, replaced the brake and clutch fluid, and gave it a quick wash and wax. Done!

I think it would be cooler to build a ramp and jump the GTI over the KTM. :)

Yes, but then you'd have to replace all the blown shocks!

Swapped the winters/summers yesterday on the Tundra, and at the same time bled the brake lines.  Pads have a ton of life left after 120k.

got rid of an annoying rattle in the Odyssey.  Loose nut, that holds the spare tire inside!

Went for run in the cool of the morning, then washed the Miata, dropped the top, and headed for an afternoon at the gym.

Last week I had the power steering hose replaced.  The day after I got it back it began running rough and eventually through a code.

I borrowed a friends Bluetooth OBD reader and sure enough, misfire on cylinder 5.  I replaced the ignition coil and that seems to have fixed it.  Glad it was an easy one to get to.
