This is the cost breakdown according to GM's maths:

$38,390 - $8,500 = $29,890, putting the cost of the Volt under 30k in Ontario. Then, add $1,600 for freight and destination. That's the price, folks.

Apologies for the typo and error of provincial proportions in the title.

Except that's not how it works, GM.  The rebate is applied AFTER taxes.   ::)

You are correct! I shall be letting them know. Cheers for the feedback!

For the record, Quebec has an 8000$ rebate on Volts and 1000$ off your home installation of a charging station if done / supplied by a licenced electrician.

My calc prices the Volt this way. Never bought a new car where the price of shipping was not included in the total price of the car , so ...

($38,390+$1,600) x 1.13 = $45,189 - $8,500 = $36,689

Not exactly under 30k, but if my "charging" situation changes (i.e. I have a place to charge a plug-in car) the new Volt will be on my radar. 80km electric range will make me use the ICE maybe 20-30% of the time and that translates into huge gas savings while the car's price is comparable to a well optioned family sedan.
This Volt is a solid transitional step until we get 200 mile EVs that are priced comparably.

The advantage of the Volt is that it works much like an EV in the city but can be realistically driven across the country.

Ontario has the highest SUB SOVERIGN DEBT in the WORLD.  The province is facked and it's in for a SEVERE restructuring which will make today's Alberta seem like Monte Carlo.

Why in the world are we borrowing money to subsidize EVs/Hybrids.   It's beyond comprehension.   :P

The point is that such information has to be mentioned every time someone complains about subsidies to renewables etc.  For too long and too often, the comparisons have been quite one-sided.  Such as the ubiquitous stickers on gas pumps that list taxes but don't mention subsidies.

I agree with you that both policies are mistakes.  My opinion is that the oil industry subsidies are the more serious error.  So I object more to the oil subsidies than the ev subsidies.

All such programs, including things like "cash for clunkers", should be replaced by carbon taxes.  And to ease the pain, it could be revenue-neutral by reducing income taxes the same amount as is brought in with carbon taxes.  As has been done successfully in BC.  With a net per capita reduction in pollution and no harm to the "economy".

Both are stupid.  But a more serious error?  I'm not sure.  The oil industry employs far more people than the green car industry in this country.  So by that metric, I think the EV subsidy is worse.
