Used Vehicle Review: Chevrolet Optra, 2004-2007

You'll get what you pay for in a used Optra - and that probably won't amount to much.

I remember at one point, must have been about 5-6 years ago, when I went to a Chevy dealer to see what they had for 'cheap cars'. I needed something affordable and reliable, even the Cobalt was out of my price point at that time and it was a new model. So the guy showed me the Optra Hatchback. I actually tossed around the idea for a little while, thinking to myself "how bad could it be?". I ended up getting my used Protege5 (3 years old at the time) and I am confident I made the right decision. I still happily drive the P5, and something tells me if I had an Optra I would have sold it for next to nothing just to get out of it.

Words of wisdom - if you are a 'car keeper' (5+ years) get something you really like...the success rates of long-term relationships are much higher that way.  ;)

Probably has the distinction of the worst car sold in Canada during its time.

These cars are why GM never gets on the radar of many shoppers.  How can the same company that brings us the amazing Corvette, the new Caddy models, and some other pretty top-shelf stuff dump garbage on the entry level consumer?  Even well into the 2000's, they didn't seem to have a clue that you sell the 23yr old a "Civic" level of car, and you might earn their business well into the future.

So many people I know are shockingly brand loyal.  How on earth could they still be marketing this car to people in 2007?

Ah, 2005.  You could walk into a Chevrolet dealership and choose between:

-2005 Chevrolet Cavalier
-2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
-2005 Chevrolet Optra

GM know how to build many types of vehicles...but, as a rule, excluding the compact cars. GM never ever made it with small car, especially in the era of front wheelers after the Chevrolet Chevette (not becaus it was better - just sayng) they didn't do even one average successful compact in North America!

...And not 1 mention of it being the reasonably priced car on Top Gear for several seasons.   ;D

"poor" side impact rating even WITH side airbags? Yikes. I'm not usually a safety-nanny when it comes to cars, but I just don't think I'd be comfortable in a rebadged Daewoo to withstand much of an impact.

This is not a joke, it is the #1 searched used car review on this site for the the second year running.  None of us know the reason.

Amazing. You guys have to share more of those weird and wonderful car stats that auto trader and autos.ca compiles. They'd be the topic of endless discussion threads. Gets me thinking that I hope you guys are making money with that market data...somebody should be.

People can't believe how bad it is, so they read the reviews over and over again in disbelief.

My theory stems in that it was a Canadian only car, so none of the American websites covered it.  And when it comes to used car reviews, Chris' are tops...so it does kind of make sense

Aww come on, if youre looking for a cheap, CHEAP, way to get to work and want an absolute appliance thats decent on fuel, and find the Corrola too flashy  ;D, then this would be a perfect device. Low mileage, non-descript looks, Top Gear reasonable priced car credentials.....what could go wrong??
Lighten up Francis.....
