You forgot who is here.  And to help make up for hijacking your thread, I will say that I've been using AMSOIL products for decades and they're just plain awesome.  Folks, if you're using junky FRAM filters, please stop and get quality AMSOIL ones.  Look on Youtube - you'll see vids of people cutting filters open.  Premium filters are worth the tiny cost when you see the differences.  The difference in the bypass alone is worth it, never mind the filter medium.  Even expensive filters cost less than a tank of gas.

All true.  And with the ability for the oil and filter to require changing only once a year, you save money in the long run.  Still want to change at normal intervals?  The OEM synthetic oil is an unbeatable value.

I'm changing the Highlander every 15K but honestly don't need to that often.  I'm a paranoid freak.  I've sent the oil off at 15K and it comes back basically barely used.  But, well, I'm old and it took me a lot to trust that interval.

Even without the longer intervals, the cold starts are worth 10x the cost in the winter.  -25C unplugged all day at a trailhead and the engine fires up immediately.  So nice.

As I lease right now and have to do the Dance of 8K changes to keep things copacetic on the warranty side..what do you mean by `still want to change at reg intervals the OEM original oil is a good deal``...there is a cheaper Amsoil,by how much, than the lifetime stuff ;) .

Used amsoil before years ago in the bike and car but the local shop kept putting the prices up to twice what I could get a Mobil Castrol PennState jug on sale...........filters yes worth the gold plating :P

I find it hard to imagine, unless this oil has no washing additives and soot remains well baked to the cylinder walls  ;)
I've never seen "like new" oil even with Mobil 1 syn after 6,000. Am I missing something?

Yes, the oil is designed for 1 year drain intervals. Ditto the synthetic filter.

It would be like draining conventional oil after only 1k....It would still look new.

Our 2013 MkII Fit gets an oil changes once a year, about every 7000 Kms. Before the change the oil still looks golden transparent with no darkening at all. Doesn't burn any either.     Surprised me that the oil stayed so clean, especially this year with the engine being 3 years old. It is Honda's own 0W-20 synthetic.

Newer engines are for sure a lot less hard on their oil than older designs thanks to much better fuel management and emissions systems.  Oils are polluted less.

That said, modern engines tend to run warmer (better for emissions and efficiency) rev higher, and they usually also have very tight tolerances.  It places different demands on oils.

When I look at the cost of operating a car - oil changes are a drop in the bucket.  With longer drain intervals, spending an extra $30 per change is nothing.  A half tank of gas?

My 1-2 shift in the MX-5 is a bit cranky at times.. only noticeable really because all other shifts are like buttah.
Think a trans oil swap would help?

Yes.  Definitely.  Especially a synthetic if the car currently uses a conventional fluid.  However..I could sell you Amsoil but I believe there is a better choice out there IIRC (for Miatas).

If you're part of a board, see what they say.  Or ask JonGenX.  I don't recall specifically what the product was for older Miatas or IF it applies to the new Miata box though.

But if I can help..I will.

^ Thanks - yeah there's a Motorcraft oil that from a quick read has mixed results.  One person says it hugely helped the 1-2 and another said no difference...
Seems to be a fairly common complaint that the 1-2 shift is a bit notchy

It should smooth out a bit with time... 2nd you have to be sure you're in the gate...everything else is perfect.
I'll look more into some synthetics

The Motorcraft oil is THE oil to use in the NA 5 speeds.  I swapped mine in the spring for the Motorcraft, it feels great.   :drive: I think Julie did the swap as well, her's is a newer gen than mine.  I've not heard of anyone using it in the ND yet.
