Forester Fuel Leak. My solution: Comments, concerns?
« on: November 27, 2014, 07:06:37 pm »
The Forester is leaking fuel.  It's the return line.  As luck would have it, the leak is in a place that is inaccessible....you have to drop the tank to get to it.  I don't want to drop the tank.  So I was thinking of the following solution:

There is room to add in a new fuel line (125 psi injector line) directly from the pump and snake it though and attach it to the accessible area of the hard lines.  I don't see any issues, though maybe in my annoyed state I'm not thinking this all the way though.

I've included pictures of the areas in question.

Is this is viable solution?

That sounds like a perfect winter-beater repair job.

Just make sure the line is gasoline compatible as well as good enough for the pressure.

Can  be sure it wouldn't be rubbing on anything?

Yea, it's 5/16" fuel injection line.  125 psi.  Since it's a return line, I'd imagine there's next to nothing for pressure.

Yea...that might be the only issue.  I may put some shrink wrap on the fuel line in the areas I can see for added abrasion resistance.  It would take quite awhile to wear through though.  1/2" OD, 5/16" ID.

I'm still thinking of solutions...this was my first idea.  And it might be the best one.  Not sure yet.

I think you've got it.  Otherwise, it's a real PITA job.  I'd do that fix and then when summer comes if I felt ambitious, drop the tank- probably not.

It has the usual Ontario rust for a car that's seen salt since 1998.  Not sure how much would actually come off vs. break off during a fuel tank drop.  Reading the service manual it doesn't seem difficult...just PITA for a simple fuel line.

In no way would I ever possibly suggest setting it on fire, blaming the fuel line and then getting a new car.  No way I would say that.  Ever.

Except I wouldn't get a new car.  :( I'd guess the insurance would give me next to nothing for it...$1000 if I was extremely lucky?

My GS400 and Porsche 911 are also old...... ;)

No question it's a beast in the snow though.  Which is why I got it.

I'd say you're making the right call. Maybe install some of that plastic wiring loom over the fuel line before you install it if you're worried about rubbing. Do it and forget it.

I would put an oversized hose on top for added abrasion protection versus loom.
