Let's see how "ugly" the Yaris looks on the road in 10 years when 90% of its current competitors which will have been sent  to the scrap yard.

The Yaris  also demonstrates to all those free trade idealogues  that  B segment cars don't have to be built in Third World countries.

Are you suggesting that 90% of all the other small cars don't hit 10 years?  I think I will disagree with you there.

LOL, that's a ridiculous claim.

What's with the re-posting of Brendan's articles lately with a new date on them, having me believe that they've been updated in some way?

I mean, I always enjoy reading Brendan's articles over and over again, but still, there's some disappointment with the date of post not being the date of ORIGINAL post.

I drive a 2008 Yaris for my commute and I think the 2008 looks better.  I think the bold new Toyota styling is getting uglier.  I'd rather take a beige anonymous Toyota.   :P

One of my biggest beef on the 2008 is the noise level. It just plain howls on 407 concrete pavement.  So I'm glad this has been addressed in the new Yaris.

With a manual and light chassis, that car is actually fun in the corner. The suspension has enough starch to make it responsive.

I wouldn't mind to have more power but that engine feels torque′y with the manual.  Stick it into 3rd gear in the on ramp, it can surprise more powerful cars.

I average mid-40 mpgs in winter and high 40s in summer. With the OEM low rolling resistance tires, I've done 51-52 mpg for my commute in the first year.

I knew the drawbacks of this car before buying it.  But I was looking for a basic, no frills and dependable commuting car.  This car has been dead reliable and very little maintenance is required as well.

But you have to know what you are in for and accept the flaws before choosing it.

I guess that's the biggest advantage in using old tech.  You know exactly what you're buying with basically no risk.

It's like the Ford Ranger of compact cars.  But, somehow, more expensive, even!

Heck, aside from the Micra (which you can get for $13K with the autobox) it's the only vehicle with a 4-speed box (AFAIK).  All the others have CVT's or 5/6 speeds.  Toyota is seriously behind.  Compare it with the Fit LX ($17K).  You're getting 130hp, Honda's excellent CVT, and 7.4/6.2 l/100km.

However, To get power group , Bluetooth and a/c you need to go to a Micra sv with a package that does include a back up camera which is $15200. The Fit LX with automatic is $18595 before freight/pdi and fees which means it is $1600 + taxes more, which in that very price conscious market is too much for some! The Yaris at $16900 before frt/pdi sits between Micra and Fit which is why it will sell in limited numbers. It has better long term reliability likely than Micra , and is a bit less expensive than the Fit which is a better car.

They only lost a sale if you were considering one in the first place.

I have no problem in buying a Yaris. I know i'm going to drive 10-15 years and it won't break. The Micra I'm not so sure. In the same time I would suspect it would break and cost a lot more in the long term over 10-15 years...the Yaris I would have likely spent nish - nadda and it would be tight - like it just came out of the showroom. Just like my Echo is today at 13 years.
