$75K, or a new C7 Corvette Stingray. Which would you choose?
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:56:38 pm »
Each year we have a lottery to support the local hospital foundation and I buy a ticket every year and it's the only lottery I support.  The early bird draw is a week from today and the prize is a choice between $75K cash, or a new Vette Stingray.  Most years I would take the cash without much consideration, but I'm on the fence so far this year.

I'm thinking $75K would buy us something nice for a dd like a little 250 GLK, or OBW 3.6, and still have enough left over to buy a hobby car like a Miata, TR7, older Camaro, or something really unique.  On the other hand a Stingray would be pretty awesome, but only for part of the year.    :-\ :-\

Which would you choose?

I would take the $75k in cash, invest the proceeds, and lease the Stingray for a few years.
I love it when a plan comes together.

I'd use $55K on a GLA 45 AMG and spend $10K on a nice used NA/NB Miata, with $10K on mods for tracking and a trailer.

I'd take the cash, pay some debts, put a bit into the house, and spend the rest on a new Wrangler or used S4 or 335i.

I'd take the cash then wait for the Golf R to show up. Until then I'd buy another Hilleberg tent and go back to Norway for a month in the summer.

New Mustang GT with a track pack and put the rest towards the house. I love the Stingray....but the idea of no mortgage is better.

Sent from my Galaxy S3

Lighten up Francis.....

Cash on the house or invested. I don't need anymore cars, but I might be tempted to take like 3K and buy an old beater pickup, just cuz I've been wanting one recently.

Come on, it's found money which means it has to be spent anyway. So I'll take the Corvette, drive it for a couple years then swap it for a new STi and then have both of those cars out of my system (like them both but probably would never buy them with earned money). Then use the residual for a deposit on a new FGC of some sort and get back on track.

With these lottery prizes, isn't the car usually "worth" (based on MSRP) a fair bit more than the cash prize?

But unless it's a fully loaded C7, would it be worth more than 75K - even with taxes included?  Seemingly would make it a pretty easy decision to take the cash.  Now if it was a $100K Z07, versus 75K cash....decision time!

Besides, these cars in lotteries are always A/T - give me the cash and let me buy a 7-speed Vette, in whatever colour I want!  ;)

Cash.

As a young lawyer I was introduced to the concept of "eff you" money.  You save up enough cash so you can say "eff you!" to your law firm, clients or both.

i think EVERYONE needs "f u" money, not just lawyers.   ;) ;D

And it doesn't depreciate nearly as fast as the Vette would.

Cash here too. Please.

This.

If we're talking $50k cash vs a C7, then it's a debate.   $75k?  Cash all day long.

Count me in for the Cash, and I agree with the legal preference for eff you money.

As a young lawyer, my eff you fund is currently insufficient even for Lady Noto's ring.  Thereafter, downpayment on a house.  Thereafter, a car.  Thereafter, kids.  Thereafter, chocolate.  Definitely chocolate.

A fancy car would be a massive waste to me before the age of 40ish, and thereafter (the key word), I'd rather spend it on vacations.
