Drove the awd Equinox yesterday during the winter storm and it handled well.  Nothing like a storm on the 401 in London to test a vehicle.
Anything with AWD will handle better than the Elantra you're used to ;)

True.  Was actually first time I drove anything awd.  The Patriot I had last week was 4x4 but couldn't really tell.

Maybe, but I'd argue that the primary reason for high depreciation is ridiculous MSRPs from the MNFR to begin with - and of course incentives have to follow that.  Incentives, rather than being used to clear out old/unpopular models, are now used on seemingly all models to trick consumers into thinking they got a "good deal".

I disagree, there are many popular models out there that get amazing incentives throughout the year.

And depreciation isn't solely due to incentives...Toyota had $2500 on the hood for the Camry last year, but that car didn't depreciate nearly as fast as some of the competitors - there are many other examples out there.

sometimes it's good not to be able to tell... especially for a driver who doesn't really know. best to keep it simple.

to answer your question sask.... i hate the pricing strategy. but at the same time, it's not a "habit" that can just change overnight... they attempted to do it with the cherokee and the dart, so we'll see if it pans out... sure hasn't on the dart...

people get hung up on different things... price or discount is probably the most common thing.. everyone wants to tell you how much they saved... so for those customers, it works out well for me as a salesperson.. but i still don't like it...

sometimes it doesn't make a difference... cvp vans... everyone knows they are 19995 or even less (i sell em for 18999)... no one seems to know they are 29895 msrp including freight and such... eventually people catch on that the msrp means nothing... if you have a party every day, it eventually stops being a party...
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

of course it's not the only thing... my bad if i worded it that way, not what i meant... it is just a big contributor to the resale...

i find the actual biggest one factor is the highest available discount (so, similar to incentive)... like a fleet. many cars get special fleet prices and they get scooped up in droves. so if say the farmers association gets double the rebate on an escape... or rental fleets get an extra 3 grand off a van... or factory employees get an extra 5% off a malibu.

basically whatever car has the biggest discrepancy between an average retail selling price new and the absolute lowest that ANYONE could buy it for; is a hard amortization hit... because a dealer is aware of those sales and knows the cheapest they technically *could* get that car for new, so that gets taken into consideration when looking at trade in/auction prices...

man, i just get typing and never stop... i have text diarrhea

Latest test drive: 2014 RAV4 fwd XLE.  Love everything about it - comfortable, great layout - except the drive.  You felt EVERY bump.  Almost like a carnival ride.  It's a shame because was so hoping this was going to be our vehicle.

Then went over to Honda and tested a 2013 CR-V.  Meh.  Didn't do anything for us - wife hated it as she thought it was an old mans vehicle.

Went to Mazda and sat in the CX-5.  Very basic although didn't have time to drive it.

Will put the RAV4 in our back pocket but the ride was pretty bouncy/rough.

If you think the RAV4 is rough, then you won't like the CX-5...I found it very firm for a CUV.

Try the Forester. Much softer.

Aren't the 2015's available?  They have some pretty significant improvements, including a new drivetrain.  But, if she didn't like the styling and overall feel, the newer model probably wouldn't have changed that.

My wife had the same feeling about the Forester when we were looking.  One look and she said no.  The Escape was similar, but at least I got her in it.

If we were shopping the same category today, I think the Outback would win. Fack who am I kidding, she'd probably still pick the CR-V  :P

As a car salesman, what do you think of the pricing strategy?  Would it be simpler and easier to sell without all the incentive games?  Or are consumer so conditioned to them, they won't buy unless there is money on the hood?

It's the monthly payment that drives the sale.  Even more so on the leasing side.

Not the greatest on promised fuel economy, but not awful.  I hear good things about the interior.

If you do consider the Rav4 again, drive it with AWD - the suspension and ride will be different from the FWD version.

Keep trekking on!

There IS an FWD 2.4 Cherokee North.  I just looked on Jeep.ca.  Seems a bit pointless to me...like an Audi without Quattro.

It is a small tall wagon, I see no problem with getting 4/2 if that meets the persons needs

While obviously to each his/her own, but in this case I wonder how much is the added cost to go 4x4. In mean, later it would mean less depreciation as well. I imagine a 4x2 Jeep to be a much tougher sell than a 4x4. If that is true on lesser AWD stuff, like RAV4s and CR-Vs, imagine a Jeep.

Perhaps something the OP should factor in as well.

I don't understand why everyone is so focused on resale.  Not everyone sells their vehicles after only a few yrs.  In my opinion living in southern Ontario a 4x4 is totally unnecessary.
