Wow that's the "perfect" '86 Turbo. Great options, great condition, unmolested.

I had a 1989 S2...a wonderful car, and built like a brick outhouse, as you say. The doors close with a "click" not a "thunk" or a "whump'. Dynamically, these cars still stand up...they are easily the equal of a BRZ/FR-S or Genesis coupe or RX-8. And the Turbo cars have a soul and sound that the normally-aspirated 944's can't quite match.

Great car and definitely fun on the track.  However, they are a little prone to fuel lines wearing and catching on fire.  I would recommend a little research on this topic on a 944 specific site and make the necessary repairs/modifications to ensure that it doesn't happen.

Other than that, great cars and decent value on the used market.

I like these and I actually came very close to buying one once; non-turbo though with a huge dent in the driver's door, but otherwise good shape and I think it was going for around $1500. Values seem to be on the rise recently though.
IMO these have stood the test of time really well, as mentioned in the article, performance (of the turbo at least) is still comparable to some of today's sports cars, and it still looks really good in my eyes. I actually still see a lot of these being used as daily transport in the city - why replace what still works right? I saw two just this morning, both non-turbo; one really dirty and tired looking, and then another really well kept example, both driven by older guys wearing business suits and sitting in early morning traffic on Yonge St.

Thanks for the nostalgia read. Your grey one in the pictures look mint and good as new btw, nice find.

Close friend of mine in the late 80's had owned two of these. First the non turbo then realizing that a 16V VW was quicker he then purchased the 944S. Problem was that he was so paranoid about getting the car stolen or dented that he would seldom leave it unattended.  Going to the movies was out of the question and took away from ownership. Eventually he sold it realizing that he needed a car he could use comfortably Mon-Fri.

Considered the poor mans Porsche at the time vs 911/928 it was a bargain and nicely powered in the turbo variant considering the era. Both of his car were red, the colour matched the car of the time well.

rrocket, when I was in Windsor, there was a red/maroon 944 (not sure what pedigree) on Askin Ave.  I'm not sure if it's still there, but the guy drove it like a daily-driver, not a show car.  True loving, I'd say, and not the shiny kind.  He fricken always smiled back at me as I walked by and stared at his ride.

i was looking at getting one of these back in high school... had a line on one for 9 grand and thought it was a steal. a friend of my dads had one that he let me borrow for a bit to see if i would like it.. but it just wasn't meant to be. the only ones i found were rougher than a kid such as myself could handle...

always nice to find a good example of a car you are hunting for.. even better when you find it and it's for sale.

When we lived in Calgary, there was a guy with a red one of these up the street.....in my teenage mind, it was awesome. Seeing the Turbo again today, I stand by my teenage mind.
Lighten up Francis.....

My Brother in laws boss has a guards red 87 turbo, She had only 30,000kms on it at the time (about 5 yrs ago) Car was absolutely mint, She only let the Porsche dealer service it, was babied to the extreme! She nearly sold it after She bought a new Cayenne, but the Cayenne proved troublesome so She kept the 944 and sold the Cayenne.  ;D

Hey there everyone.... thanks for the kind words in regards to my car!  It's been a lot of fun so far & I plan to keep it for many years to come.  The search took a while for a non modified stock car that was in good condition & had reasonable mileage on it.  I look forward to doing some improvements in the future & wrenching on the car myself.  Like the article stated I changed the front & rear shocks to the stock spec Koni's and it made a noticable improvement to the ride & handling.  Next up will be a few seals & trim pieces and then maybe a few small performance mods to get a little more power to the ground.

Hi, I was lucky enough to have had three of these. Two 1987 Turbo and a 1990 (yes it was!) Turbo with 247 HP. All three were "chipped" to increase power, all three were tracked with Porsche Club, none had ANY repairs or breakdowns in a total of about 5-years driving. The first one was sold to a buddy who added about 150,000 KMS with no breakdowns or repairs, other than the usual brakes. Really excellent cars, and good ones are worth much more than the first Boxsters, and way more than older Cayennes. Wish I still had my 1990, but I did sell it for more than $30,000 in 2004(?). A 1988/9/90 "S" gives you more power and most had upgraded M030 suspension, my 1990 had that. With factory rolled arches for larger tyres, cool!

Here we have somebody who thinks the time and money he spent on his resto-mod is actually recoverable in sales price....

So a little update on the car since Paul's test ride last September. A few weeks after Paul's test drive I went to drive the car to work in the morning and the clutch pedal went all the way to the floor & didn't want to come back up... looked underneath & there was a big puddle of fluid... ended up that the clutch slave & master went so those had to be replaced.  I didn't have time to do the work, nor did I feel like crawling around under the car to get at it so I took it to a local indie guy for that work.

The car ran great for most of the fall until right before I was putting it away in storage, I was getting a stumble at WOT along with a lot of black smoke pouring out the exhaust indicating a rich condition.  Under partial throttle it ran fine and would even give a little bit of boost.  Some research indicated that it was most likely the fuel pressure regulator that needed to be replaced, but I decided that would be a spring time project & just drove the car as it was.  I put the car away in storage in late October, didn't really do much to it, I aired the tires to their max pressure and put in fuel stabilizer. When I got to the storage facility I disconnected the battery & hooked up a solar battery charger that I placed on the hood of the car, over top of the car cover.

I pulled the car out of storage in mid April (as soon as I could), when I arrived I did a quick once over of the car, the tires were all still full of air (about 50psi), the battery was reading just over 12 volts, there was about a tablespoon worth of oil under the car, but I still double checked to make sure that there was oil in the engine.  Once I got the battery hooked back up I fired up the car, it belched out a good cloud of smoke, but otherwise was idling normally on a cold start.  I pulled it out of the barn slowly & let it idle outside for a few mins while I brought the air pressure down on the tires back to 36psi.  Drove the car back home somewhat gingerly for the first 10kms, once it felt warmed up & I was confident everything was functioning properly I pushed it a bit harder to see how it was doing.  The rich condition showed up quickly again, so I didn't push it too hard.  Once I got the car home I changed the fuel pressure regulator (I bought one over the winter on sale at Autopartsway.ca) which took all of 30mins.  Fired the car back up, inspected for fuel leaks... there were none thankfully and then I took the car for a ride.  Rich problem was gone and the car pulled like a freight train on the highway under full boost!  Later that week I changed out the oil and filter and it was ready for the summer.

All summer the car has been running great, only issue has been the AC, one of which was a finiky AC control switch & the other the R12 coolant.  The AC control switch I replaced myself and I thought it was going to be a simple plug and play deal, but I had to de-solder 7 pins off the control board in order to remove the old switch & then solder in the new one.  And of course my soldering iron didn't heat up enough to melt the old solder, so I had to run out & buy a new one.  Good news is that when I put everything back together the new switch worked correctly.  Took the car to a friend of a friend & he did the R12 to 134A conversion for me, he inspected for leaks and couldn't find any, but I'll have to bring it back in a few weeks for another check.  The car blows very cold air now, almost better than my 2014 Wrangler does.

Decided to stretch it's legs this past weekend & went down to Toronto & back with it and it ran flawlessly there and back.  Like Paul said in his article it does make a good long distance cruiser.  Even with the heat wave we have going the car didn't overheat at all in Toronto stop & go traffic, the AC was blowing cold air, it was as comfortable as driving in a modern car. Gas mileage on the way down & some bursts around the big smoke came in at 9L/100Kms, not great, but not bad for a 29yr old sports car.  On the way back we took hwy 7, so my return mileage should be better seeing as I went thru about half a tank only and that was with some feverish passing on 7 where dropping into 3rd gear was necessary... and fun  ;D

Overall I'm impressed and happy with the car, I've put on about 3000 miles since Paul's test drive and continue to drive the car about every second day on average.

Hey, thanks for the update  -it's awesome to hear about owner experiences of older cars.
