A good used SUV/CUV for surf roadtrip?
« on: October 19, 2014, 06:02:37 pm »
So a buddy and I are planning a month-long surf trip this December: my buddy wants to buy a car here in Vancouver and then make our way down to Sayulita, Mexico (near Puerto Vallarta) and use for a month down there, maybe driving it back up afterwards, or maybe selling it down there. We're looking for a cheap surf rig that's reliable and good on gas.

Here’s our additional criteria:

- Must be able to fit two 9-foot longboards inside (we’d use roof racks for traveling, so it’s more just for securing overnight or in sketchy areas away from the water),

- needs a little bit of ground clearance  -  Not for four-wheeling or serious off-roading, just for rutted/muddy roads.

- good on gas

- 4wd not necessary, FWD actually preferable

- manual transmission would be nice but not mandatory

- less than $5,000

So the cars I’ve come up with are ~10-year-old versions of the following:

- Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe

- Kia Sportage and Sorrento

- Suzuki Grand Vitara

- Ford Escape / Mazda Tribute

I’d normally throw Subaru in there as well but I feel like we’d be paying a premium for AWD when we don’t really need it (not to mention the mechanical complexity and gas mileage penalty). As for Toyota and Honda, they’re blessed/cursed with ridiculously high resale value, so there doesn't seem to be much out there for <$5k.

Anyhow, thanks for reading and if you had any thoughts on the ones I’ve listed or other suggestions, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Lebowski

caravan  ;D ... though no manual

Won't there be issues with import/export if you take the car, leave it there, and fly back?

Hey thanks. I actually did think about the Caravan - it would be great save for two issues: ground clearance and gas mileage.

Re:import/export you're probably right - to be honest we haven't looked into it if it's even possible to sell as we're leaning towards just driving it back.

You might be able to fit the boards into a Matrix.

But I'd be looking for a first gen. Pontiac Vibe.  Not the best to drive but meets all your other requirements. Maybe not the ground clearance but the short wheelbase will help.. AWD to, if you can find one.

Cool thanks, I'll look into it. Yeah the driving experience is fairly low on the priority list. I'm not sure how set my buddy is (he'd be the one buying) on the ground clearance as a mitigating factor. But he's spent some time down there and seems to think it's important. Anyhow will look into it - thanks.

I'd go Ford Escape. Dirt cheap, easy to find parts.

Stay safe!

Thanks! Yeah that is the impression I get with the Escape - cheaply made but cheap to run too.

Too nice (relatively speaking), too low, too bad on gas.

This is as reliable as anything newer on your list, you'll be able to sell it for what you paid regardless of miles put on it, and they're good on gas.  And WAY under budget.

Hey thanks for this. That one looks really good and definitely worth considering, though pretty far from YVR. I'll see if I can't maybe find one that's more local. Certainly Good to know there are some good affordable Rav's out there.

Ha! Ain't she a beauty though.

if your Subaru is too low, take the Matrix off the list.

it would be great on gas but will likely be too low for rutted roads if the Subie is too low

I doubt two 9' surfboards would fit inside a Ford Escape or similar size CUV/SUV.  An 8 ft. piece of lumber fits nicely inside my wife's Grand Caravan through the centre of the vehicle between the middle row of seats with the hatch shut.  Take the rear seats out of the van (or if it has Stow N' Go, flip into the floor) and sleep inside.  Similar fuel economy (perhaps better) than a V6 Escape.  Better ride.

They would fit in an Escape for over night only which was the original criteria.
