Basic 2011-2014 Reliable Used Fuel-Efficient Sedan
« on: October 12, 2014, 05:50:03 pm »
As the title states, I am looking for a basic used (2011-2014) sedan that is very reliable and fuel efficient. I live in Vancouver Canada and am thinking of spending between 10K-18K. I will be using this car primarily for driving to and from work (70km a day), and taking road trips several times a year.

In addition, it will be great if the back seat had ample leg room. For example, a PT Cruiser and Jetta has great amount of legroom. A Fit and A4 does not.

Any suggestions?

Haha PT Cruiser. Please don't do that to yourself. :)

The Jetta wouldn't be bad. You can probably get a TDI in that price range?

Otherwise the last gen Accord (the one that was a bit E60 5 series esque in the back) was rather large I believe. Can also check out an Avalon if you can find one.  (EDIT: but the Avalon is a V6)

For the size, the 2009+ Corollas have fairly rear good legroom...
Camry Hybrid? May have to go older for your budget but they're incredibly reliable

As an option, you can get a new compact or a midsize sedan of Korean origin. This summer they were selling the Elantra for around 12k, brand new, but with no AC. Yes, 12k+tax for a brand new midsize sedan. Later there was the Elantra GT, auto, with AC, being offered for 15k+tax cash. 2014 M.Y. cars can be found still with considerable cash discounts (look at Kia as well). If you need more room, there maybe '14 Sonatas left (last year before refresh), must be hugely discounted if you can find one.
BTW, I had a 2009 4 cyl Sonata that was very fuel efficient, and not one thing broke on it either.

Why is everyone suggesting compact sedans? ??? Rear leg room is clearly an objective and the A4 was classed as insufficient in that regard. There's plenty of choices that meet the objective.

Yes but the point is that there are many options that satisfy both the fuel econ and legroom criterion.

I've sat comfortably in the rear of my Mazda 3 on road trips. I'm 6'1" 210 lb.
