Burning DVD's
« on: September 17, 2014, 08:53:06 pm »
Quick question; If I want to burn a DVD disk do i need DVD-R disks or DVD+R disks?
I receive a message that I need to insert a writable disk into the drive but I already have a DVD-R disk in it. Help.
Using Windows 8 facking 1

-R and +R are just different ways of making discs IIRC... Generally doesn't matter

It's hardware dependent, actually.  Some DVD writers will only do one format.  DVD-R you can't drag and drop either.  DVD+R seem to work better for me.

There's usually little labels on the cd/dvd drive that will tell you what kind of discs it will take.

Specification on the Laptop for the drive is thus:

        Maximum speed and compatibility:
        Read: CD-ROM (24x), DVD-ROM (8x), BD-ROM (6x)

Stupid question....but is the DVD blank?

Are you trying to burn data onto the DVD...or a movie?

No, it has a small amount of music on it that I installed prior to trying add a small video.

I tried another blank disk and the drive did not recognize it either.
I'm stumped.

That can be an issue.  You can only write onto it once.  Single use IIRC

Seriously - single use? You can only record one thing on a DVD-R disk?

You can record multiple sessions but you have to tell your burning software that you want multiple sessions.  Some music and dvd players will not read multi-session discs.  They need the discs to be closed.  You should take into consideration where the disc will be used.

I am often backing up store bought music CD's and store bought DVD's, as the kids can ruin them, when I use them in the car, or a portable DVD player.  Not sure what you are using it for.  But often at Staples, at Costco, you can get brand name DVD's for $10-$15 for about 50.  CD's actually cost more nowadays.  I prefer only to write once, higher compatibility, less issues.  I prefer using Nero...

DVD+RW purchased tonight. No comparison between them and the DVD-R and the drag an drop feature.
Thanks all.
