I was entice to buy at first then I realised that technology change every year. What's new today will be old tomorrow.
So, I change my mind.

I find my interest waning from time to time as well, my 4S works great for the most part. Until I get into apps where the old A5 strugglies a bit.

I plan to upgrade to a 6 ... eventually.

I just upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS 8.  It has a new feature, iCloud Drive, which is only compatible with other iOS 8 devices and any Mac running Yosemite (the upcoming computer OS).  I'm sure there are other similar examples but the new version of iCloud will suffice for the point being made.

My iPhone 4 cannot run 8 and my ancient iMac topped out at Lion (10.7.x), which is three major versions below Yosemite (10.10?).  In short, they can't take advantage of iCloud Drive or any other new-generation-only feature.  The problem is, the 6 is mucho expensive and my 4 still works fine, thank you very much.  Even my computer - slow though it is - is still limping along at a steady pace.

My goal is to get the computer done first (Mac Mini with external 3rd party screen), followed by the phone in a few months.  Best Buy has some pretty good deals on fairly high quality 27" monitors, so I might go for one of them.  The fact that they honour Apple's Education discounts is a bonus.

BTW, any recommendations for a monitor?  I've priced out some nice IPS style units (I don't play games but do watch movies) in the $300 to $500 range.  What would you buy in that range?  PM me if you don't want to hijack this thread.

A year old, what's that matter?  Before that it was 4 years old.  But I won't upgrade this one for a long while now as it is super fast.

I put IOS8 on my Ipad 4 and I am sure that the battery lasts longer now.   I'll check if mrs tpl's Iphone 5 exhibits longer battery life as well.

I noticed that the first day, I'm guessing a 30% improvement.

Apple has consistently provided software updates for phones up to three years old. That's not bad IMO, and I don't think Android is any better.

Yeah but they force the upgrade one you.  Making your old hw slow.  Then you are forced to upgrade.

Rather just not upgrade.  Not broke don't fix it.

I sold my 4 and got a used 4S about a year and a half ago. Much better processor and camera. That's still an option for you random006.

The iPhone 4 was released 4 years 4 months ago. The Nexus S was also released about 6 months later and stopped receiving updates after Jelly Bean 4.1.

The iPhone 4S was released almost 3 years ago and got what is likely its final OS update. The Galaxy Nexus was released a couple months after that and stopped receiving updates after Jelly Bean 4.3.

Yeah but they force the upgrade one you.  Making your old hw slow.  Then you are forced to upgrade.

They don't force anyone to upgrade. I know some who are happily using iOS 6. They don't feel the need to have more features than what they originally paid for and all the power to them. Me, I love the new features that iOS 7 and 8 brought.

The apps just get less and less stable until you give up. That's been our experience with our first gen iPad.

This. I have a first generation iPad and it's become almost unbearable to use as it's getting slower and apps keep crashing at a high rate.
