Anyone wonder why the Coscto tire shop is insanely busy?

I think here in NL EVERY tire shop is busy once mid-October hits.  My new wheels just showed up via Fed-Ex:

So I ended up getting a used set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS70s with just over 9/32nds left manufactured in 2012 and mounted on steel wheels for $350. Should last me two or three winters. I didn't want to spend too much on the Odyssey especially since the Mazda is running on 5 year old winter tires, and I think the tires will last longer than the transmission.

I might still consider getting Xi3s for the Mazda this year. I haven't been happy with the Toyos, while the worn Xi2s I used on my Sienna last year seemed extremely suitable for Vancouver's mild winters.

Good move.  They're still in the good zone for tread, and the 70's wear WAY better than the 60's did.

How many kms have you run your WS70s for so far and how much tread left?

It doesn't look like we'll have much snow this year in southwestern BC if any as per the farmers almanac, but who knows.

The ones on the Corolla have three full years on them and are at 9/32 still - probably 30K-kms on them, maybe a bit more.

Just ran down to the basement:
Corolla Xi2s, 4 seasons complete: 6/32" remaining
RX400h iG51v, 1 season complete: 10/32" remaining
Forester WS70, 3 seasons complete (and put on in Oct, take off in May!  Grrr!): 8/32"!!!  :o

Seasons are not determinative, I know...mileage is...and the Corolla definitely has the most mileage on them, but I'm rather impressed by all.  The WS70s are still my favourite, my brother just picked up a set to go on his Crosstrek.  $1100 incl fancypants rims, installed 225/55R17.  Not bad.

Brother wants to buy my boss's old 235/55R18 fancy rims with RFT @10,000km on them for $400.  Thoughts?

^^ Wow. That's cutting it pretty close if you're running your winter tires down to 32nds of a millimeter. ;)

Lol I wish I saw that!

Thanks John and Noto. I have to keep in mind that Vancouver's winters are milder and the tread will wear faster. Mind you, it rains a lot here so it won't be as bad as dry pavement. I could probably get maybe 20,000-25,000km from 9/32nds down to 6/32nds so that'll be three or four winters.

I think it has to be said that most top-tier winter tires will do the trick.  Some will perform better than others in various ways (i.e. some will handle better, some will bite ice better, some will track through deeper snow better, etc.), but all will be better than non-winter tires.

In recent years in the GTA, we've had a lot more snow than considered "normal" and that could be the difference between why I think the Xi2s are less effective than the Blizzaks...I remember when we first put the Xi2s on the Corolla, I felt I was in a fricken Wrangler.  It's worn down over the years, which can be attributable to a bunch of things (including my own silly mind).

All winter tires will be reasonable, and there is no "one best" for all-around performance.  Recommendations can, and should be made for specific regions.  That's why I like what Canucky Tire did here:

http://tires.canadiantire.ca/en/resources/tire-testing/

(I don't like the specific suggestions that are likely sponsored/money-driven, but that they focus on different tires for different regions).

I agree with that.  My XI2s are great... until you have deep snow, which I discovered when trying to park at an unplowed carpool lot two winters ago after a 15-cm snow dump.  It was not good.  Heck, the Crappy Tire Nordics on my old Jetta were far, far better!  They bit through everything.  Generally speaking, where I (and many other members) live, the Michelins are fine.  They are quieter and more stable than my old Nordics, but... that's because they don't have very big teeth.

For very snowy regions, I think the Blizzaks are the better bet.

That said... my next winters won't be Michelins.  I want bite for all conditions.  How's that for a rhyming slogan?  ;D

I'm curious to read tests on the WS-80s.  The WS-50s were, at the time, a break-through tire in that they advanced the technology dramatically.  I could barely believe how good they were.  They had an incredible balance of snow and ice traction and suddenly you didn't need to buy tires with weird unpronounceable names to get terrific winter performance.

I used the 50's on the Forester for a long time, and loved them.  When the 60's came out, the 50's were discounted heavily and so I bought an extra set for the Scoob, but bought the new 60's for the Corolla.  The 60's weren't the improvement I was hoping for.  Ice traction was better, slightly, but snow traction was no better (maybe even not as good) and they wore crazy fast.  Luckily, just as the 60's on the Corolla were done for, the 70s hit the market and so I equipped both the Scoob and the 'Rolla with them, on the promise that they were the leap forward I'd been hoping for.

And so it was.  Ice and snow traction were both improved over both the 50s and the 60s, and wear seemed greatly improved too.  That's a bonus, as I'm looking for traction and wear is a distant second place.  The 70s gave me what I wanted: both cars pulled away from icy intersections at <-20C like champs and smashed through deep days too.  The Forester made it over snow covered passes and out of plowed-in trailhead parking lots like nothing.

One day going over Paulson Summit near Rossland BC on a deep snow day with little or no plowing, we left everyone behind as we ascended from the west, arriving at the top with a WRX on studded Hakkas and our Forester on WS70s and no else to be seen.  Those tires have proven themselves time after time to be spectacular and kept us moving when so many others could not.

Bought a set of General Altimax Artic last winter after doing lots of researches and despite some worries about the brand... I love them. Great in deep snow and ice + very quiet. They are great, great winter tires. My baseline is Blizzak as I bought them when they first came to market and when toyo was dominating the market out East. Also have X-Ice on the other car. The Generals are better than the Michelins IMO.

I have the Generals on the Highlander and they're a good tire, and great considering the price point.
