Okay, since this is now the Costco thread...
I was in the city today, so thought I'd stop by Costco to pick up my membership card and check the place out. Overall, the shopping experience was only mildly unpleasant (parking, crowds, parents letting their screaming kids run around) and I did score a few deals (Oral-B toothbrush heads: $38 for 7, vs $20-25 for 3; wife's Aveeno hand lotion: $15 for a 2 pack plus travel size vs $10-12 for 1 bottle; Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements: $20 for a big jar vs ... actually, I don't know what my wife pays for that stuff, but I bet it's way more at our local health food store.)
Didn't buy much food, except for a case of Kirkland organic tomato paste for <$1 per can. Also a big jar of peppercorns for $7.50 and a neat little container of saffron for $13.50, which isn't a screaming deal, but I liked that it had a date of harvest on the jar and a little certification label from the region in Spain where it was grown: I'm expecting the quality of the stuff to be pretty good.
And of course I ended up buying a kg each of pine nuts and hazelnuts. The price was good, but we'll see if my wife and I can can eat them all before they go rancid.
The liquor store was interesting: bought an assortment of cheap (<$20) pinot noirs and a $24 Barolo (because you never know
). I know the Kirkland Champagne is pretty good (yes, it's real Champagne), so I'm guessing their other wines will be at least decent, too. Oh, and I did see one of our favourite Chiantis (Nipozzano Riserva) selling for $17.50, which is a good deal, considering that it regularly sells elsewhere for $22-24. The only problem is that it sometimes goes on sale elsewhere - I just picked up a case last week at Safeway for $13.50/bottle!
So, in summary, it was kind of fun to check the place out, but I don't see us shopping there regularly. The prices did seem pretty good, but the local prices can also be pretty good (as long as you're willing to wait for sales.)
Oh, and even though the low-fuel light was on, I couldn't bring myself to put Costco gas in the GTI. I'm sure it's fine, but I'll spend the extra five bucks for V-Power, thanks.
