I go to Costco just to get milk. They're closer than supermarkets, and much cheaper for dairy products (cheese is easily 50% of the supermarket price). Gas is up to 0.18$ less per litre than the gas cartel in our 'burb. Said cartel probably objected to our local Costco having a gas station, as it's the only one in the region without one. Should say was. Construction Equipment has showed up  :bounce:

Costco seems to have enacted gas pressure pricing here too.  Recently, all the stations save for Costco jumped 10c one day, and after Costco held fast, the other all seemed to come back down.  Typically, Costco is 4-10c per liter cheaper for regular and 7-15c cheaper for premium.

I also suspect they dilute their gas less in the winter with butane as our cars don't seem to see nearly as dramatic increases in fuel consumption when using Costco fuel in the winter.

Would be super cool if I received my Executive rebate on gas, but oh well, it's already the best deal in town.

Costco in Quebec also sells beer. :)

Costco in Alberta sells beer, wine and hard liquor.

I've been to Costco in many places in the US, and my take...

1. The stores here are pretty clean, the stores there are SPOTLESS.  No pallets in the aisles.  Merchandise is constantly cleaned up.

2. Their stores are not as busy as Costco in Alberta.  It's just constant here from opening to closing.  Costco is "on the oil."

3. The selection of liquor in the US is fantastic compared to here.  That said, Costco Liquor stores offer some pretty amazing pricing compared to our other stores.  One wine we like is $19 in the store, but $10-12 at Costco (for some reason the price fluctuates at Costco)

The mafia (LCBO) controls all liquor sales here....Even thought the public has time and time again demanded it no longer be sold exclusively by LCBO...

It's been good and bad here.  Selection is far better, access is much better, but competition isn't what people anticipated thanks to one outfit owning a large majority of the stores.  Pricing can be better than other places, but it goes the other way too.

Costco has helped to put some new blood into the market here.  They're selection is very, very limited, but the pricing is super aggressive.  Oddly, you don't have to have a membership to buy liquor there.

Odd, so how do non-membered customers come into the store then?

Costco doesn't have a good selection of anything.

Non-membered stores can get a guest pass. They can also get their friends to buy them a cash card which acts as an honourary membership.

The liquor stores have a separate entrance. No costco card required. And limited selection with aggressive pricing is the base of Costcos strategy.

Okay, since this is now the Costco thread... :rofl2:

I was in the city today, so thought I'd stop by Costco to pick up my membership card and check the place out. Overall, the shopping experience was only mildly unpleasant (parking, crowds, parents letting their screaming kids run around) and I did score a few deals (Oral-B toothbrush heads: $38 for 7, vs $20-25 for 3; wife's Aveeno hand lotion: $15 for a 2 pack plus travel size vs $10-12 for 1 bottle; Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements: $20 for a big jar vs ... actually, I don't know what my wife pays for that stuff, but I bet it's way more at our local health food store.)

Didn't buy much food, except for a case of Kirkland organic tomato paste for <$1 per can. Also a big jar of peppercorns for $7.50 and a neat little container of saffron for $13.50, which isn't a screaming deal, but I liked that it had a date of harvest on the jar and a little certification label from the region in Spain where it was grown: I'm expecting the quality of the stuff to be pretty good.

And of course I ended up buying a kg each of pine nuts and hazelnuts. The price was good, but we'll see if my wife and I can can eat them all before they go rancid.  ::)

The liquor store was interesting: bought an assortment of cheap (<$20) pinot noirs and a $24 Barolo (because you never know  :) ). I know the Kirkland Champagne is pretty good (yes, it's real Champagne), so I'm guessing their other wines will be at least decent, too. Oh, and I did see one of our favourite Chiantis (Nipozzano Riserva) selling for $17.50, which is a good deal, considering that it regularly sells elsewhere for $22-24. The only problem is that it sometimes goes on sale elsewhere - I just picked up a case last week at Safeway for $13.50/bottle!

So, in summary, it was kind of fun to check the place out, but I don't see us shopping there regularly. The prices did seem pretty good, but the local prices can also be pretty good (as long as you're willing to wait for sales.)

Oh, and even though the low-fuel light was on, I couldn't bring myself to put Costco gas in the GTI. I'm sure it's fine, but I'll spend the extra five bucks for V-Power, thanks.  :)

Thanks for the update Helidriver. I've been considering re-trying Costco since it has been several years...

Costco has upped the quality with their "Kirkland" gasoline with more detergents and was upgraded to top-tier in March of 2014.

Oh, okay, good to know. Not that it would be a deal breaker, but is it ethanol-free like the V-Power?

If I recall correctly, Costco only states 87 octane gasoline as containing up to 10% ethanol. I've seen a couple of posts where people have asked the attendants and they verbally confirmed that 91 octane gasoline does not contain ethanol, so this is what is generally understood.

I'll check next time I need to fill up, but that'll be in two weeks.

My Blizzaks arrive today and I had them mounted on the rims. Costco will mount on Subaru later in fall for free. I had 3 separate employees tell me that the siping goes all the way down now, not just 50%. It appears to be a mantra that they are to repeat to customers. I asked about the microcell compound and does it go further than 50%, but no one knew. According to Blizzak webpage it is 60%. Costco also had a new sign up advertising $90 off Pirelli winter tires.

it's interesting they're willing to mount them later for free for you guys - they had me take everything home and bring it all to be done at once, otherwise there was to be an additional charge of $30 or something  ???

I wonder if there's a Country-Wide policy that my store isn't following?

I saw today that Costco Canada are giving up on Amex.  Good.  I suspect that customer demand will end up with them doing a deal with Visa or Mastercard  although it might be a Costco version of one of them if one of the banks wants to do a deal. And that will be a pain for those of us who just don't want extra cards clogging up the wallet.

Really? I thought Costco bought the cheapest gasoline they could find...usually supplied by Husky (read from non-credible sources  :P )
