Dodge Ram 48RE transmission - slipping 2nd gear
« on: September 02, 2014, 01:37:04 pm »
Posting for my buddy, his Dodge Ram with a 48RE 4 speed automatic is badly slipping in 2nd. Any ideas? He'll look at the usual suspects but it seems that any fixes will be temporary and inevitably the transmission will need to be rebuilt.

a bad slip is unlikely to have any quick fix actually hold... probably in need of a rebuild. had it happen with an old 4 speed i had.. .the one plate/disk was totally devoid of material... easy enough fix once apart... not so fun to get apart! good luck.

oh, and just for clarification... i sure didn't do it myself.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

What tooscoops said....is it like a little judder and a slip or is the gear completely missing??? Sounds like it needs a rebuild. I would look and see if anyone has an upgrade kit for the internals so that the shop can install that for him instead of OEM parts. Also a deep, aluminum pan is not a bad idea. Whenever he has it rebuild make sure that he gets the tranny shop to either replace or flush his tranny cooler very well.
Lighten up Francis.....

Seems like it either misses or quickly slips out of 2nd.

Thanks, I've passed this info on to him. He's planning on keeping the truck for a long time so he wants to do the rebuild right. I don't know what kind of transmission cooler his truck comes with but I recommended maybe upgrading it.

I put in a Long TruCool unit in my Honda Odyssey rated for 18,000 lb GVW. My Odyssey is 5600 lb GVW, 6600 lb GVW with trailer w/o transmission cooler and 8100 lb GVW with trailer w/ transmission cooler. Overkill much? lol. But the transmission cooler quickly gets warms after 5 minutes of driving and hot after 10 minutes, so I don't think there's such thing as too much cooling when it comes to ATF. My cooler has a built in cold fluid bypass anyway
