Not sure who does Hyundai's market research but ask any guy with $80k to spend on a car if he will buy a Benz, Audi, or BMW vs. a car for $15k cheaper that has a "H" badge affixed to it? They may incise a guy looking at a VW, Acura, Lexus, or premium level Toyota/Honda...... This is not rocket surgery.

Well, Hyundai is going more after the Japanese lux buyer than the Germans with the Genesis, but there are former and current German owners who now own a Genesis.

July sales -

Genesis - 180
GS - 41
Q70 - 6
RLX - 9

They are doing something right if they are outselling the Japanese (combined) by more than 3x.

Is the coupe numbers included in the 180?

i would guess the numbers are for "large sedans" or whatever category the Genesis Sedan is in...in that case, it would make sense the coupe numbers would not be included...but i'm not sure how they are calculated, so just a guess.

No, those are straight Genesis sales. The Coupe averages in the 200-300 unit per month range these days. The Genesis has typically outsold its Japanese competitors since it was introduced. As of July 30 we'd sold 858 Genesis vs. 299 for the Lexus GS, for example.

Good numbers for sure then and IMO vs the GS the Genesis is the better choice.

There will probably never be a manual Genesis sedan ever. None of the other choices came with manual ever either. I think the only Genesis competitor that ever came with a manual was the BMW 5 series.

I'd take a look at one important factor: How will the Genesis drive 15-20 years from now? Resale values? There's a 2011 Genesis sedan 4.6L V8 with 100,000km selling for $19k. A 2008 Lexus GS460 with 100,000km is going for $26k. So good used value with the Genesis.

Seriously? Most of these are likely sold into leases for 3 years to executive wannabes, and then go into livery service when off-lease. If any are still around in 20 years - which I highly doubt - they would be found in the wrong side of town.

You must be mistaken.  Because it is an established fact that Hyundai will never be able to sell the Genesis without a separate dealer stream, just like Lexus.  :rofl2:

A 20 year old Lexus LS400 is one of the best vehicles anyone could buy. A good candidate for an inexpensive VIP mod project.

I wasn't talking about the Lexus. I agree, they are at a different level of quality than the Hyundai.

10L/100km average and you were disappointed?

This is a 3.8L 330hp A.W.D. boat.  What were you expecting?

Even to get that figure you must have done quite a bit of highway driving.

I'd say probably better mileage than the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel...?

i thought 10L wasn't too bad for a vehicle like this.

James reviewed the Buick Lacrosse a couple of months ago and it got 9.8, with 450 of the 600 kms being highway miles (and has a smaller, less powerful engine).
http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/day-day-review-2014-buick-lacrosse/

also reviewed was a Regal AWD, which ended up the week at 10.5 (despite having a much smaller engine and being a smaller car):
http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/day-day-review-2014-buick-regal-2-0t-awd/4/

and the Caddy CTS AWD also finished at 10.0:

http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/day-day-review-2014-cadillac-cts-awd-premium/1/

i don't see anything wrong with what is basically a full size AWD car finishing the week at 10.

10/100km is good for this kind of car. I'm at 9.9/100 lifetime (including two Manitoba winters) for the Berlin taxi with V6, AWD and +/– 4,200lbs. I doubt any legit gas-powered competitor would do much better in the real world.

So, another area where the Genesis is competitive is fuel mileage.

You know what would be an interesting experiment?  Take the Genesis and rebadge it as something else - Honda, Lexus, Acura, Toyota, whatever and then see what peoples perceptions are.
"Eeek, Honey, look what Lexus did with the new GS...looks great, but the doors only open to the traditional 3 points, the display uses swipe gestures, and the rear badge is a Toyota one but the front is a Lexus one."

;D

i don't know if i'd call that an "important" factor. if you buy a car for how it will perform or what value it will have in 15+ years, you are bound, more likely than not, for disappointment. but the car for what it will do over the next 8 years and look at the rest as bonus. people looking for a car for over 15 years really can only look at a very select few if they expect it to be quality the whole time.

an interesting little thing i just did... searched auto trader for cars for sale 1993-1995... 270 in my area... the brands represented more than the others benz - 25, bmw - 11, toyota - 21, honda -18, lexus - 8.... of course, chev -51, ford - 27 were the big guys, but they had a lot more sold originally...

i'm not going to buy based on that, but it does seem to speak for certain brands longevity.

You've got it backwards. In Korea, Genesis is sold with the wing badge all around the car. This was also the case with the first generation.

In North America, the decision was made to put a Hyundai logo on the trunk lid. This is done as a matter of brand pride. Genesis isn't just about sales numbers; it's also about brand-building. Having the brand's logo affixed to the trunk lid of a well-engineered, beautifully-styled luxury car is another tool for changing outdated perceptions
.

Well they need to find the ppl that made that decision and turf them.  :)
