I wonder if the engineers in the Alps have something up their sleeves with that 7litre tank?  Have they got a really efficient electric motor?  Maybe a super-high-efficiency gasoline engine design?
I have it: They went through the NSU files (bought them years ago from Auto Union) and have built a Wankel that delivers 3.0/100Km.  I think that's a good rumour for the last Monday of August.

I use my electric drive Smart as a city car only!  And Micheal, that would be nice if you could after having recently tested the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 and the Volt make a test drive of the 2014 Smart electric drive!

Loving my Smart ED.

The 2014 model has been sold out in Canada according to local dealers, over 133 sold in August alone!
MB is taking deposits on the 2015's.  There aren't any major changes to be expected on it.

The 2016 Smart ED will be completely new, based on same chassis as the brand new 2015 Smart Fortwo gas model.

There's also the conveinence thing. It's not like whenever you stop and get out of the car you're going to get all your 130km range back. Even if you find a L3 charger you need 30min to get 80%. Who has 30min to wait for this thing to charge?

Right.  Convenience.  My Smart ED takes me exactly 5 seconds to recharge, as that is the amount of time it takes to plug in the EVSE connector.  Turns out that people sleep at night, and electricity is cheaper then too.  If your commute is longer than the electric range of the car, then don't buy it.

I've got 5000+km on my Smart ED, not a penny spent on gas, and total cost of $108 to "fuel" the car for the past 10 months.

Stop placing your "must be able to drive to Saskatoon in a driving wind storm" mentality on cars that are clearly designed and marketed for city drivers.  There are very small number of dealers selling the i3, and they are in big cities.

Getting electric charge out of the windmills and into the car batteries overnight is the thing to aim for and only volume usage will be enough. Which means affordably priced equipment.

Smart offered a $100/mo lease ($1800 down) last month on the electric drive model and sold out the entire Canadian inventory.

I plugged in last night, when Ontario had 2GW of wind power on the grid and it was ready when I woke up this morning for my trips today.  Never once ran out of juice in 5000+km so far, and likely never will.

The question is why wouldn't tesla put a generator in their cars
That would make it interesting car

 :rofl2:

Right.  Because the car isn't completely sold out and making 25%+ margins.  They already have vast Supercharger coverage today, and plans to completely cover NA in the next 8 months.  Do you believe what you write?

You really have driving the kool aid
Two charging station in Ontario wooo and another one in BC
It would take you 1/2 hr just get to their charging station in Yorkdale on a Saturday
Electric car way be good if you never drive more then 50 km a day ,
Your car would not work in the area I live or my life style

You are mistaken.
Here's some facts.

1.  The Toronto Supercharger is here:
http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger/toronto
That is 2.5km south of the 401, directly off the DVP at Lawrence about 400m from the DVP exit.
It would be no more than 18 minute drive from my house.
Note, because it's an EV, the Tesla gets green plates to drive in the carpool lane BTW, just like my Smart ED.

2.  Range of the 85kW Tesla Model S is 450km.
Superchargers add 50% of that range in 20-30 minutes.
Superchargers will enable drive to cottage country North of Barrie, and Windsor to Quebec City.

3. Maybe my Smart ED doesn't work for you, but it was a big hit here in Toronto in August when 133 were sold, a record for pure electric cars in Canada sold in one month.

Cheers.

Wasn't that strictly because they had huge incentives?

At least the I3 is actually a very nice driving car. Most fun EV I have driven. Most character in a BMW in ages.

No, it's strictly because the car is awesome.   ;D  But yes, being the least expensive electric car in Canada is one of the compelling reasons.  This little car is a well designed EV.  The packaging done by Daimler to put a fully conditioned (heat/cool) battery under the floor of the car and the electric motor between the rear wheels with a single reduction gear transmission is impressive.

BMW did a fantastic job "adding lightness" to the i3 to take advantage of the electric motor instant torque.
Must have been a hoot.

I move my little Smart ED, takes off like blazes from a stop.

Looking forward already to purchasing another EV to replace our gas SUV, just waiting for the next generation of vehicles in 2018....

So they are already on the road?

We went to the i3 event a few weeks ago.  That was our first time driving an electric vehicle, so it was interesting to us.

I can't believe how generous the Ontario government is subisdising electric vehicles.  For the i3, you are eligible for a $8,500 rebate. If you install the Bosche supercharger in your home ($999 cost), you can get another $1,000 rebate.  Plus you get a green plate.

I wonder if BMW is making any money on this car? Considering how much advanced technologies and carbon fibre are in this car.
