PC Laptop Suggestions
« on: July 31, 2014, 04:13:24 pm »
Steven bought an Acer at Costco about 18 months ago.  It recently died, and so he has a credit from Costco to get a new laptop.  In terms of reliability, I have heard that Toshibas are hard to beat.  Any suggestions?  We are going to see what Costco has this weekend...

I checked their selection online...
Personally, I have had a wonderful experience with Dell, whereas the few HP laptops in the family were not so great. But honestly it's a crapshoot, and most of the time you'll have a good computer.

If the budget allows for it, I'd go at least midrange, and avoid the cheapest laptops. IMO 8GB of ram is a must to allow for future-proofing.

Of all the ones there, this is probably the one I'd buy : http://www.costco.ca/Dell-Inspiron-15R-English-Touchscreen-Laptop%2c-i7-4500U.product.100124897.html

ASUS is supposed to be a pretty safe bet, but I'd avoid Acer :P

Lenovo are ok.  They still make ones called Thinkpads.   I have a Lenovo Ideapad with a touch screen....seems to work fine.

ASUS. They make top quality PC hardware. I've bought their laptops and plenty of motherboards and other peripherals. Everything just works and is never glitchy. YMMV, as they say tho.

Will be used primarily for web-surfing, email, spreadsheets, word-processing, streaming Netflix, no gaming, no programming, no graphic design -- nothing fancy and sophisticated...  He hates technology - doesn't own his own cell phone (has Blackberry from work that he forgets to charge/take with him).  Ease of use and reliability are top criteria.  Apple products (not sold at Costco anyway) are, in his words, "overpriced and not worth it."

Galaxy Note Pro 12.1/12.2 Tablet.  A few managers use them here for the same purposes.  The included stylus is very nice and has more than enough power to do what he wants.

Does Costco carry ASUS?  I've had great experiences with their hardware.

Yes, Costco has Asus.  I think I will point him in that direction.  Ron, your tablet suggestion is good, but he found using my iPad frustrating while we were in Cancun.  He needs a keyboard.

Wow...how old is he?  65?   ;D  I've seen 75 year old ladies navigate an iPad easily...   :rofl2:

Ok...how about a Microsoft Surface 2?  It acts like a tablet, but has a detachable keyboard.  And plenty of power.

48 - and in damn good shape for almost 50, you've seen the beefcake pic from last winter -- but he is a Luddite at heart -- he really hates technology and is not well versed in it.  When we came back from Cancun, the house/dog sitter had turned off the power button on his 54" flat screen TV, and he was convinced it was broken, until my cooler head prevailed, and I found the admittedly well-hidden switch and reset the TV to stand-by mode...

I have a Dell pc and a Dell laptop.  Reliable service from both.

Some of those cabinet mounted touch switches are almost impossible to find.  Took me a while to find it on my moms samsung tv.

Our company has been buying hp laptops for quite some time now.  There was a time when field techs were issued panasonic toughbooks, but they figured the high price wasn't justified.  I have 2 hp laptops and they get a lot of use and seem to be reasonably reliable and I also have an hp desktop and no issues with that either. Edit:  And we have an first gen Ipad and a few smart phones.  I hate computers... :P

I've had good luck with Toshibas in the past. The current one I have is merely ok though. Laptops seem to a bit of crap shoot on the hardware side.
