Finally replaced the tires on the RX400h
« on: July 29, 2014, 05:03:08 pm »
So, after the Michelin Energy MXV4 S8 (OEM tires) kicked the bucket in 2008, then again in 2009, and then again in 2011 (all 4 replaced each time...), we swapped to Yokohama Avid ENvigors.

The Yokohamas were really nice, but were a bit harsh riding, and quite frankly, lasted 3 years (down to the wear bars).  I suspect that although 'rated' to hold the heft of a giant hybrid CUV, the Yokohamas were SL rated and not capable of bearing the weight.

Enter the....wait for it....suspense rising...holy crap, what did Noto buy...AHH, TELL US ALREADY:

Nitto NT421Q in 235/55R18 104V spec.  Tah dah!

So, after one week and a lengthy 100km, here's what I think so far:

Tires make a huge difference.  The RX rides SO much smoother now, bumps/potholes are handled far better, the cabin is quieter, there's less bounce, can't hear expansion joints any more, on-ramps can be taken a good 10km/h (at least) faster with the same body roll, braking distances are seemingly shortened, and I can no longer chirp the tires (despite the RX's immense off-the-line torque).

With a 75,000mi (note MILES, not KM) warranty and a 640AA rating, they should last quite a bit longer.  They're also rated at 1984lbs instead of the 1764 lbs the Yokohamas or the 1709lbs the Michelins were rated to.  They were much cheaper than the Michelins, but more expensive than the Yokohamas (by about $40/tire).

Only complaint?
They do ride a bit noisy (tire vibration noise, far less than the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70s on the Forester - so we're not talking loud, but louder than the previous tires we've had on there).  I read that the sound tends to go away after an initial break-in point, so we'll see what happens.  It's not intrusive.  I find it odd, though, as the 421Qs are said to be the quietest ever made by Nitto.  I'd hate to imagine what the 420S or the Invios are like, then.

Before you all offer your Miss Fix-It opinions, yes, they were balanced and the wheels were aligned by a reputable service centre.  Also, note that I'm nit-picking.  They're REALLY not loud.

Haven't driven them yet in rain/snow, but apparently they're good for all-seasons.  We have dedicated Winter tires for the RX, so these will still never see snow (unless there's an October or April storm).

Next time you spend a decent sum of cash, let me know so I can suggest other things you should have done with your $ :P

Only Hercules tires that fit the OEM rims are the Tour 4.0 Plus, and with a load rating of 1765lbs, I don't believe they'd be up to snuff, and the UTQG of 520AA is far lower than the Nitto's.  Nittos for the win (albeit, maybe cheering a little too loudly while driving off).

Not a good showing for the Michelins. I have a soft spot for Nitto after a good experience with terra grapplers on my old truck

I scoured the forum and figured it out http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?action=post;quote=541238;topic=45473.80;last_msg=609677.  True, I am too young for it.  ...but never too late to learn!

Guys guys. What air should I put into my Hercules?  OEM or aftermarket?  I want to keep my warranty.

So drove from Buffalo to Toronto through this:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/news/burlington-flood-2-months-worth-of-rain-falls-within-hours-1.2727623

...in the RX400h, fitted with the Nitto NT421Qs in 235/55R18 104V.

Wow.  Amazing.  Holy crap.  Maintained speed through flooding roads, never once hydroplaned, gave me too much confidence (yeah, hindsight's a b!tch, but I made it home safe!).

That reverberating noise, however, is too prominent.  It's the only sore spot on an otherwise perfect tire decision.  I'm going back to Kaltire to see if there's an issue with installation because they just shouldn't be so loud - and they are LOUD.

Another update, since this is a hot topic...

Took the car to KalTire today to see if they could figure out the noise.  It's not tire-road noise, so the tires actually are incredibly quiet.

...but now the guessing game begins:  What is the noise?

Sounds like the hum of a sport bike tailgating you.  Sort of changes pitch with varying speed, though not appreciably.  There's ZERO vibration to be felt in the steering wheel, and the car doesn't pull to either side when I let go of the wheel.

Their mechanic is going to look at it tomorrow, but it's getting a little frustrating.  Makes me wonder if it's the tires or the RX, but the noise only started after the tires were changed.  Also, took to the dealership for the usual million-point inspection and they couldn't find anything wrong (not to say they didn't look at every little bit, and we didn't mention the road noise).

Go!

So issue resolved.  Right rear wheel bearing and seized calipers on the left rear brakes, damaging the rotor.  $600.  Ouch.  Done.

So, now that we've ruled out that the noise is not from the Nittos, and I have had another 100km or so to drive on them:

WOW.  Silent.  In a hybrid, we're talking ZERO noise.  It's like a Buick in there   The tires are comfortable, yet give the beefy hybrid CUV some ability to tackle on-ramps a good 15-20km/h faster.  I'll have to see if Nitto makes a good tire for the Corolla when replacement time comes up, presumably in a year or two.  The X-Ice2s will likely get the new WS80s that just came out, but that's also at least 1 more season away.  Problem is, Green and Ross doesn't carry them and I won't pay for seasonal switchovers.  Maybe X-Ice3s will prevail... :(
