Oh, the GTI was a fine car but also a good $7K more after everything was taken into account and in another insurance is in another ( much higher) category.

I find that interesting. I went from a Protege5 to a Mazda 6 Wagon to a GTI and my insurance never went up.

For reference in SK at least, a 2015 GTI (4 door) and 2015 Mazda 3 sport GT are almost identical in insurance costs ($1264 vs $1278 / year, if no discounts or penalties).

But I remember checking on the GTI a few years ago, and it was well over $1500 per year.  Maybe GTI drivers in this province don't make as many insurance claims as they used to! ;)
