2002 Town & Country Limited
« on: July 26, 2014, 04:51:10 pm »
Introducing my new ride, for the mere price of $500!

Was on sale in the neighborhood so I checked it out. Mechanicals were pretty solid for a car this price so I bought it. It does come with it's share of issues but nothing that I can't live with. It has leather, fog lights, auto climate control, heated seats and mirrors, power sliding doors and trunk. Engine swapped out with a 3.3L V6 at some point. AC works ice cold too and heated seats work too. No DVD screens and no sunroof. Used my former 98 Altima's plate for some old schoolness.

By the way, the hood will be changed really soon. Got one from a donor 2006 Grand Caravan with 265k for $40. This must be the worst hood rust in the history of Chrysler vans. :p

Did the seller throw in the garbage for free, or was that extra?   :rofl2:

Anything for $500 that moves under it's own power is a good buy.

Sweet. You could probably source a few body parts at the junk yard to clear up some of that rust. Give the interior a good vacuum and Bissell Little Green/Proheat treatment with Folex, POR15 the rear wheel wells, and it should prove a reliable hauler for years to come. Good buy, I approve.

Congrats, good buy for $500, you will need a lot of work here and there though.

Sorry it took me some time to get back. It has close to 470 000km now on the body, but engine is changed and unknown mileage on that. The AC blows ice cold and it drives pretty nice. It does need an alignment but the tires are almost at 4/32 so I can ruin the tires. I got 4 winter tires with it as well. Also, the hood has been changed now so it looks much better. The 3.3 is a tank of an engine!

Just this past Friday it has developed one hell of an electrical gremlin. The anti-theft system is always armed now, preventing it from starting. First 2 tries starts the van then 2 seconds later the engine turns off. 3rd try and subsequent ones have zero crank. I have tried both keys/both remotes after the CAA guy got it to start by setting off the panic alarm. My mechanic told me this is a problem only the dealer can solve so for now it's future is unknown.

have you checked some Chrysler forums on this?  maybe this a common issue, with a known fix.

Is it aftermarket antitheft system or OEM?

Hopefully aftermarket and just rip it out

Tried disconnecting the negative cable on the battery for a minute and that didn't work. In the process of doing that now. No concrete answers yet.

As for wing, it does have an aftermarket remote starter (no longer functional) but I use the OEM Chrysler remote to unlock/lock always. The anti-theft system blocking me out is the Chrysler one.

Leave the battery disconnected for awhile, like overnight. I've found that disconnecting just for a few minutes doesn't fully reset certain security systems.

This.  Needs some time to discharge capacitors.

You could step on the brake pedal in the morning to be sure everything is discharged.

The van developed problems over the past few months. Rusty strut towers that got really bad, stuck rear caliper, battery keeps dying, hood that seldomly opened, front calipers starting to stick and blew a brake line or brake cylinder in the back. It still ran regardless but in my opinion it wasn't worth putting money into it anymore. So I had to part with it by sending it off to the wreckers. I got good money for it and I am not at all disappointed with the usage I got from this quite excellent beater. Also an excellent backup when my car was in the shop!

I'm truly going to miss the working heated seats and the awesome sound system it had.... :(

Here are it's final shots at the scrapyard place.

nearly a year and the net cost was what? 565 including tax when you got it and 400 or so for scrap? not bad! even if you put a grand into it over the last 10 months or whatever, good value there.

Yea you got your money's worth definitely.

I really wonder what kind of neglect the van was put through to get it to that state at merely 12 years old?
