Woman in the Hyundai died. I think her chances of surviving the crash would've increased had the pickup's bumper been at side crash reinforced beam level. The pickup ran a red light.

For sure, the stupid bumper height of the pick up killed her.

That and the fact the pick-up truck apparently ran a red light...

About 20 minutes ago I saw a trio of "hellaflush" cars pulled over by the SQ.  A Suzuki Sidekick, a Honda Fit and a Civic.

The cops were measuring the tires / wheels.

It has begun!

That's why there are norms on bumper height; accidents do happen. What should have been an accicdent with injuries probably ended up with a fatality.

The same with the SUV's owners who install some kind of cow catcher on the front end. What do you think happen when you hit a pedestrian with that crap?

If someone alters the suspension geometry in a manner that compromises the OEM design then they should be fined heavily and given 7 days to comply or surrender the vehicle. If the vehicle is involved in an accident that injures or kills a person then civil law suits must be permitted for criminal negligence. The suppliers and installers of the aftermarket parts should also be liable. Its gone well beyond reasonable.

Causation would prove a potentially difficult point, as is often the case in civil suits.

All it would take is one moron to run over a rich dudes family. Or a group to come out of the woodwork to finance a suit against an individual to set a precedent. If someone I knew was involved in an accident I would advise them to get the other car checked for mods.

^^That's a good point. Consider the liability car makers face for defective/out-of-spec parts these days (ie. GM's current field day). If someone purchases a new or used stock vehicle and mods it in some way causing it to less safe, it makes sense that they should be liable.

That is hilarious, and ridiculous. Not because the ban is stupid, but because this is a superfluous piece of legislation. Cars already have minimum ride heights and a strict set of modifications that are allowed/not allowed - so hellaflush cars are already illegal.
Strange this directive would be added.

That's how most laws seem to be put in place in Canada, with no regard whether it's already covered or not.   I'm sure this was some politicians crusade to make us all safer/get re-elected.

True. The BC Motor Vehicle Act already has a few sections.

Quote
Clearance height
7.091  A motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4 500 kg must have a minimum clearance for all parts of it, other than the wheels in contact with the level roadway, that is no lower than the lowest point on the rim of any wheel in contact with the roadway.

[en. B.C. Reg. 167/2006, s. (a).]

Sidewalls don't get much thinner than 3". I would not want to drive a car around with less than 3" of ground clearance.

Quote
Wheel alignment
18  Side slip of the front wheels shall not exceed 9 m per 1.6 km as measured on the alignment gauge.

The caster, camber or toe-in of a vehicle shall not be out of adjustment to the extent that it is apparent visually.
Vehicles shall not be misaligned to the extent that the variation of the track exceeds 75 mm and the variation of axle centre exceeds 50 mm.
Motorcycles — The swing arm bushing of a motorcycle shall not be worn beyond the manufacturer's specification which would affect the safe operation of the vehicle.
The longitudinal wheel alignment of a 2-wheel motorcycle shall be such that the rear wheel centreline must pass within 12.5 mm of the front wheel centreline when measured at a point directly below the front axle.
[en. B.C. Reg. 658/76, s. 2; am. B.C. Reg. 343/77.]

Is this subjective? My buddy ran 7 degree camber and a police officer noticed.

Quote
Vehicle noise
27  A motor vehicle shall be equipped with an exhaust muffler which complies with section 7.03 of the regulations.

The opinion of an inspector as to whether the engine and exhaust noise is greater than that made by other vehicles in good condition of comparable size, horsepower, piston displacement or compression ratio shall determine whether exhaust gases are expelled with excessive noise.
When tested in an inspection station, the vehicle engine, any auxiliary engine and exhaust level shall not exceed Table 3 standards.
Table 3

[am. B.C. Reg. 656/76, s. 2.]

Class of Vehicle    Maximum Allowable

Sound Pressure Level

DBA
Light duty    83
Gasoline-driven heavy duty    88
Motorcycles    91
Diesel-driven heavy duty    93

Should let my friend who straight piped his Miata know.

Nothing about stretched tires though.

I definitely agree that a family of someone seriously injured or killed like the one listed above should sue or have the right to do so the other driver and even the government should prosecute for criminal negligence. Same as all the silly pickup up truck drivers that keep the tailgate opened to save on fuel. The laws should be modified to allow the cops to fine them IMO.

Suppliers/installers of pickup lifting parts could probably get away with it with a disclaimer stating the mods are intended strictly for off-road usage.
