Have a Nissan mechanic check the CVT fluid level and condition on a used Maxima ahead of your purchase.

That never came up in my research-- I wonder how common an issue it was.

Or buy the older model with a 6spd manual and now worry about any kind of CVT silliness.
Lighten up Francis.....

They only sell when Nissan puts 10K on the hood.  They go fast then.  :rofl2:

This is unfortunately a perfect example how a car manufacturer can screw up a winning combination. At the end the Altima more than picked up the lost sales of the Maximas so Nissan did all right sales wise but it lost a bit of its sole in the process...  :'(

With models getting bigger with every generation and the Altima so close to the Maxima, the Maxima was bound to get forced into a corner.  Nissan couldn't make it much bigger.

Whereas Toyota went the boulevardier route with the Avalon over the Camry, Nissan went Grand Touring with the Maxima over the Altima.  However, how GT could they go without stepping on Infinity's toes?  So Maxima loses out.

BTW, I wonder how Avalon sales compare to those of Maxima given that they were both subject to the same kind of marginalization / redundancy?

Cheers,
John M.

We liked our '02 but the '05 we had seemed like a step backwards. When we looked at the '09 it was like ...."meh" I'd say Nissan revamped and redesigned this model right off of most people's radar.
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

This.  The 2003 and older were the ones to have.  My pick would go to the 2001 SE Anniversary Edition in manual.

They continued offering the manual until 06. I preferred the 95-99 style, but I'd take a 2000-03 as well. Manual transmission of course. Fully loaded.

How so?  What do you perceive they did wrong?

Me too, but the 2001 SE Anniversary had some other nice features that no other models did:

1.  Limited slip differential
2. Some extra HP and torque.
3. Exclusive exterior and interior trim pieces

Of course, the other 02+ introduced the VQ35, but the VQ30 was a real gem of an engine.

Look at the posting after yours. Also I suggest you do a little research on the Maximas, especially the model SE 2003MY vintage and before and compare it to the competition then.

I used to like these way back when.  Nowadays, I don't even see very many of them on the roads.

I don't understand, so if you don't see them on the road, you don't like it?
