Update -What Should I Pay? 2013 Focus -Purchase Made!
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:29:57 pm »
This is an offshoot of this thread http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,87465.0.html

Now that it looks like I am finally ready to make an offer on a car I'm solicting advice.

Car: 2013 Ford Focus Titanium Hatch, Manual with Handling Package.
http://www.carrollsouthshore.ns.ca/used/Ford/2013-Ford-Focus-d5f7cc280a0a002000b46c4c6cda0697.htm
Asking price 17,999
On the lot since March with no real interest (maybe a loaded manual Ford Focus at a small town Chev dealer doesn't attract interest)
Clean Carproof

Blackbook
Vehicle :   2013 Ford Focus Titanium 5D Hatchback
Kilometres :   12500
Options :   Leather

Low † :   $16,056

High † :   $17,800

I'm going to pay cash.

So what price on the road should be the target (NS tax is 15% HST)

Thanks for all advice.

manuals generally don't attract as much interest. just a truth in the market unfortunately.

so they are selling it basically high blackbook?... i'm not going ot look it up and just take your work that you entered all the right info...

if that's the case, if they discount it by anything, you should buy it. ha!

general rule of thumb is ignore the taxes because there isn't anything you can do there, but if you can sell it for what you paid, you are doing alright... could you sell it for 17900? if that blackbook is correct, i should hope so.

i guess you can offer 17 plus taxes, but man.. sounds like they are asking too little, so i wouldn't pass on the car if it was what i wanted even if they stuck to their price.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

As I suggested in the other thread 19.5 k is what I'd aim based on a 14.5k titanium I saw earlier and my own new car purchase earlier this year.

Tooscoops has a good point about the price... for kicks and giggles I calculated the OTR price for a new titanium.. well over 27k  :o .. very fast depreciation especially for the higher level trims

I put the Blackbook in there for interest sake. Its as accurate as you could get online. The online version does not allow you to select Manual Transmission for a Titanium so the prices may be 6-800 to high without that deduction.no place to put the Handling Package  either (but its only $600 new anyway).

Its been my experience that dealers rarely pay "true" high blackbook. Especially if they take in a car that is not the same brand as their own dealer. Maybe if it was a Ford at a Ford dealer but my guess is that they jam you for reconditioning etc or that they may show high blackbook but are taking some of that out of the new car. I mean if you trade a Focus on a 40 K truck with $6000 rebate on  it its easy to show a 17 K trade when in reality you only give 15 K and a 4K rebate.

There are 81 2013 Titaniums on Autotrader nationally. This one is the least expensive. Next closest are around 18,800 but they have Nav, Sunroof and the biggest thing that messes up the comparison..the fact that many dealers list the DCT as a MANUAL. Its difficult to compare manual to manual.

I do appreciate all the advice and the recommendation of 19.5 is sound.  If I paid full pop it would be 20 7000 after tax. I'm sure they will try to tack some admin fees or something on. I think anything under 19 700 I could probably live with. I really don't want to go over 20K.

Given the smaller market (and thus, potentially smaller absolute number of persons that would pick a manual Ford hatch over an auto one),

I would offer 16,500. And set my personal limit at 17,500. (without taxes, I don't count taxes in when I negotiate, 'cause I'm not good at math, lol.  :rofl2:

Then I'd walk away if they don't budge down to 17,500. I've done this a few times (said, thanks for your time), and then they always seem to budge. So I figure they must be making a profit that is good or acceptable to them.

Wow, those cars depreciate... Awesome as used buys!

Toolatecrew, have you test driven a manual Focus? You said your children were not that tall...... I'm 5' 4". I could not fully depress the clutch without my other knee hitting the steering wheel column. I had a bit of a problem with the GTI manual as well, but not as bad.

Okay, you did supply the NS tax and I do have a calculator, so I should stop being lazy.  :rofl2:

Okay, my numbers were not too far off pi314's 19.500, all in. Max 19,750 all in. If they say no, say thanks for your time.  :)

Julie thank you you are always helpful.

Deal is DONE. Deposit is made and picking it up Saturday.

I did pay slightly more than I planned but thanks to the advice from tooscoops it was definitely the right move

First although the advertisement did not indicate Navigation, the sales person said "every option EXCEPT sunroof and Navigation" and the fact that I ran all my numbers (like blackboock without navigation. While the salesman was getting the dealer plates I wondered "why does the screen say the street name?" I pressed the street name and tah dah it does have NAV!. Now I don't need it but it adds to resale and it also bumps the high blackbook from 17 800 to 18 300. As per tooscoops anytime you are paying less than blackbook you have a pretty decent deal.

The car is in showroom conditon. Not even dirt in the engine bay. Someone bought it in Ontario moved to NS and traded it on a Truck less than 8 months after purchase.

The dealer made the mistake of sticking the car at a satellite dealer (strangely enough in my hometown) 30 minutes away. A twon that had a major emplyer close and has less than 4K people. They advertised it at 20 K (I saw the ads good sales tactic by them to show it to me). No one in that town is going to buy a 20 K Manual Focus from a GM dealer. No One. They finally moved it back to the bigger dealer recently.

I did offer 19 500 and a deposit check and they flat out said no. Not even a counter offer. Simply showed me the ad for 20K . At that point and realizing I had undervalued the car due to the NAV I decided to revise my thinking. Through work I have access to pricing on what an insurance company would pay out if the car was written off (not that I want that to happen) . It was nearly 19K market value. I didn't an autotrade search and it was the least expensive titanium in Canada by at least 1K.

Were they being greedy at 20K? I'm not sure. At 17999 they might be making some $. That's OK I guess. They held firm on a $225 admin fee and $20 for temporary permit. I countered at 20650 and the deal was done. Basically all I got was $50 off, admin fee waived,  free permit and a tank of gas. But to me a good deal is a good deal and not how much you negotiate off. I figure that had to be into it for at least 17 K.
I priced a new 2014 out. Even with over 2K in Ford discounts 29K OTR!

I will also say the experience was "decent". They knew I was serious and had traveled. I had all the data and numbers. A few little closing moves were tried but nothing unethical. I was up front that I would pay cash so no talk of payment. Basically one sheet with only one number on it I cared about. OTR price. Not a single mention of rust proofing warranties etc. Most painless finance office visit ever. Here is your bill  here is who to make the check out to. See you saturday.

We did test drive a manual hatch with the kids in the back and it was OK. I'm 5 foot 8 and have no issue with the clutch. With the power seat and tilt and telescope wheel my wife had no issue either.

It was my first drive in a Focus with the Titanium handling package. Has to be the best value $600 new factory option out there. The ride is better than what my GTI was. It sticks like glue. Other than wishing for about 20 mor HP and a sunroof I could not ask for anything more in a esentially new car at under 21 K OTR.

Show and shine thread to be started soon.

Good deal and well worth the wait . Now you can enjoy it. For such a underpowered, cheap car (cost wise) it does put a smile on my face. Truro to halifax 5.6l/100km. Hfx to bridgewater about 6.0L/100km (with no down shifting ). White exterior with black leather interior is a really nice combination. Congrats.

I think in NS plates are attached to an owner not a car

That is correct.

On other cars we have taken the plate off the old one and transfered it. I actually like it this way becuase now my new shiny car will have a new shiny plate (and in NS its rear plate only so it doesn't mess up the look of the front)

Get some Stainles steel bolts or screws for your plate. The galvinized bolts on our edge rusted and stained the licence plate. Got stainless screws from cantire  for the focus.

Good to know, I'll do this as well - thanks.
