Is it normal to consume this much gasoline?
« on: July 19, 2014, 12:19:00 am »
Hi all!
I am a total rookie when it comes to cars.
I just bought my 1st car past July 12, it's a used Dodge SX2 2005, (previously known as Neon).
That same day as I took it away from the location where I bought it I drove it to a gas stn and filled the tank completely. From that day up until today I drove 103.5 Km. Today, according to the Fuel meter, there's only about 20% left. Which might be about 30 Km (?). I paid $55. Hence if I'm getting about 130 Km / $55 this is 0.42 cents per Km. It may be about right, but in general it seems rather high to expect to pay $55 every 10 days. Mmm, actually, that's $160/month, I guess it not too strange.
What do you guys think?

That's not normal. My Mazda 3 use about 9.3 cents of fuel a km in fuel and my gas guzzling Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are at 19.3 cents a km. 42 cents a km is in super car territory. Are you sure you only drove 103.5 km?

BTW, the proper units in Canada is litres per 100km.

my car burns 10L per 100 km, so  using premium, .  1L for 10 km.  $1.46 for 10km.   ~15 cents per km.

there's something wrong with your neon buddy.   fix it or return it if you can..

A ten year old Dodge fuel meter may not be accurate enough to calculate fuel mileage with. Record fuel purchases and km. traveled for a while and compare results. Keep it simple - check tire pressures, filters, and brakes. A fuel cleaner might help.

^What he said.  Fuel gauge might be flaky.

Otherwise, perhaps it's leaking fuel or slight possibility someone stole the fuel.

The gauges aren't very accurate but that's wacky for sure.

those cars weren't known for any big issue like that....

fill it til it clicks, drive for a day, then fill it til it clicks again... mark how many kms and how many L went in...

noticing any smells or puddles anywhere? even all city, racing (and losing...) at every light, you should be in the 15l/100 range...

^What he said....I also wouldn't discount the possibility of someone stealing gas from it (it's happened to me). I don't recall those cars having a locking fuel door.
