Nicely done review. I'm amazed at how good small car fuel economy is these days.
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

is it?... that's what i'm trying to figure out!!

maybe at real hwy speeds, but not the energguide hwy? i have no clue... you'd think i know. according to this drive of johns, there was no improvement gas to diesel...

Diesel has improved HP in the years and done a lot to reduce emissions, but not efficiency it would seem. My 98 has only 90HP and arguably better fuel efficiency than a new 2014 model from VW.

I like diesel but I wouldn't buy a new VW diesel, they put far too much of a premium on the car to justify over anything less than say 10 years of ownership compared to the gas VW.
I would compare the weight of your 98 with a newer one.  I bet the fuel efficiency difference with the weight isn't terrible.  Of course, the emissions systems are also sacrificing some fuel economy for reduced emissions.
