What other ways to scam private info will people think up?  And hardware/software that facilitates this too:

Wow... I must've given my drivers license a few dozen times and never for a second would've thought it wasn't legally necessary...

I've always hated it, but figured it was for insurance purposes - ensures that you don't damage the vehicle and then just run away.  I'm now thinking I'd rather give the person on the test drive my licence to hold, not scan/copy, and return to me at the conclusion of the drive.  I wonder if any would accept that?

I never let a dear copy or scan my drivers license. The last 10 plus years no one has asked me and the last place was a Porsche dealer.

I haven't been asked in years.  Back in the 90's we used to photocopy the licence if the person wanted to test drive without a salesman.   We could also just write down the info but it was quicker to photocopy it.

Note what I said:

To clarify, I meant the person holds it in the back seat of the car while you test drive.  It wouldn't work for a test drive where you take the car alone, but for the majority where the salesperson tags along, it would work.

Ah okay. I've never had a salesman ask to see my license when they drove along, but most of the time they just let me go alone..
