So, now that the S60 is gone, I thought I would post up some thoughts & experience with the three years I had it.
Just got back the lease-end inspection report last week & owe nothing. Didn't charge me for the door-ding that the S60 absorbed after I had it for all of two weeks, or for a couple of minor stone chips in the windshield. The report did note the spectacular condition of the rims...
http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,87049.msg975485.html#msg975485Overall, it was a pretty nice car & I enjoyed my time with it. As is my personality though, i quickly get bored with my vehicles & it doesn't take long for me to have wants for something else.
It looked good to me, and I think the design will age well.
Maintenance on the S60 was pretty expensive, compared to my previous 2007 TL:
Acura TL:7 services over 4 years totalling $802.
One unscheduled trip to dealer to fix a chirping belt. Dealer completed a "timing belt update" and replaced a leaking timing belt tensioner and idler bolt.
IIRC this was a common issue with the 3.2 V6
Volvo S60:4 services over 3 years totalling $1,087
No unscheduled trips to dealer.
Only issue with the car was the City Safety system acting up in last couple months. Both times it happened were on very cold mornings with temp. near -30 outside, so I chalk it up to that.
Volvo S60 POSITIVES:- Good looking car & pretty rare. Didn't see many others around. Good thing in my book
- No squeaks/rattles (couldn't say that about the TL). Very solid feel
- Engine. T6 is a 'beaut. I already miss it.
- Great traction from the AWD system. Even in wet, stomp the gas as hard as you want & you are GONE.
- Fold flat(ish) front passenger seat. Able to get a 9 foot aluminum ladder in with trunk closed
Volvo S60 negatives:- Mileage just OK. Avg of about 11.0 over lifetime.
- No personality to the engine. But, mandate of the S60 is more on the side of comfortable mileage eater than soul-stirring sports sedan. Much more convincing as the former than the latter
- Driving position not so good. Armrest on the door perfectly shaped to have your elbow roll off it, and centre armrest sits too low for me. Shame because the seats rule.
- Maintenance pricey. Offset somewhat with 12,000 intervals
- Handing is pretty good, but is nose heavy
- BLIS system confused by rain. Nav system sucked it
BONUS - Subaru XV Crosstrek - One Month Experience:- The Crosstrek has replace the S60 for now until I can't take it anymore & buy myself something.
So, in the month or so we've had it - it is a likeable thing, but has a couple of annoyances:
- Spoiled by the seats in the S60. These are much flatter & not as comfortable and leather is so so quality & slippery
- Takes FOREVER to warm up. On the cold mornings the tach sits at about 2,300 cruising at 60km/h. Engine feels very weak while it is warming. Once it is fully warmed it feels like a different car... much more responsive & the little 2.0L is actually pretty torquey. Still, it needs more f'n power. My wife disagrees. Maybe i'll sneak a supercharger kit in it like norman & his FR-S
If you've got 5 minutes to kill (after you've read all this)... here's a video of me playing with camcorder on a tripod in back seat in the S60 and Crosstrek. 0-60, turning onto a 80 km/h expressway, battling a CR-V & other fun stuff.
