My FA informed me today that I will reach our retirement goals 4 years earlier than expected. Unfortunately the mortgage is not going away...time for a new plan.

So this is good right? Or am I misunderstanding and  you will still have a mortgage in retirement?

Good but mistake was decoupling the mortgage from my adviser and told him not to be concerned with it and the equity. I now have to pay down the mortgage 4 years sooner to match his plan. 2022 here I come but the 911 is poof  :'(

That's so tragic.... :brkhrt:

Well I am sympathetic.  Mortgages at retirement are a bad thing.  We paid ours off some years before retirement as a definite part of the financial  plan.
I guess I could buy a 911 and let Snowy drive it sometimes?  ;D

Anyway...I'm sure it is nothing that a couple of really rich contracts cannot cure.   ;)

Now I understand why you haven't replied to my email lol.

I plan on downsizing when I retire and most likely to an area where real estate is much cheaper than Ottawa.

With online shopping no need to be near a big city anymore

Mortgages at retirement are certainly a bad thing,

but this day and age you wouldn't believe how many people are doing it.
I've done quite a few purchases for people over 65 years old, which really blows my mind.

Snowman, if the mortgage is really that big of a deal, you could always sell a dream car and use the proceeds to make a decent dent in that mortgage.  That should certainly help bring you in line?
 :P

Maybe all the longtimers on the forum should campaign to get you in the Senate then you could make all these minor expense problems disappear and we could follow your 'adventures' in the newspapers.

Only if you'll ok my project of having all the highways in Saskatchewan turned into 10 lane, unrestricted superhighways so that I dont have to spend as much time going through it....oh...and the #1 highway becomes our national Autobahn. Anyone caught going below 130 is to be executed on the spot  ;D If so, you have my vote.

Mortgages after retirement are suicide ,unless you have a big fat pension you can count on. For most Canadians you need this paid off because of the lower income in retirement. I'm looking forward to retirement with a lower income in that i will paying lower taxes. You have to get your affairs in order before you do this. I will be able to income split with my wife who doesn't have a pension. It's all in the planning.

The plan now is to use our TFSA's and make annual prepayments to reduce amortization by 5 years.
