The Longboarding/Skateboarding Thread
« on: July 20, 2013, 07:47:48 pm »
I think I posted before I'd bought an electric longboard this spring, I'll try and get a review up on the weekend, for now here's a video from this afternoon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CTecuN8ZWg&feature=youtu.be

A guy from Australia designed this one and ships the parts around the world where they are assembled locally, the Canadian ones in Ontario somewhere.

Weight about 20 lbs, approx double of a regular unmotorized board
Cost $1100 when I bought it, $1200 now
Top speed 36 km/hr
Range, 2 hrs or so
Battery 36v 7ah lithium polymer

Not getting very far with the review. Still commuting to work every day on it, today -8 when I started out. Road is warm so grip was good, but a bit chilly on the face and fingers. Estimate I've put about 200km on it so far.

Added LED lights front and back tonight to help with visibility, getting pretty dark in the morning.

wow, they have electric longboards now?!!!  crazy stuff!

longboards have exploded around.
sadly, one of the neighbouring town had a kid killed not long ago and they've gone and banned longboards on a whack load of streets.   No clue how that's going to solve any problem.

freaky note:  I watched your video and now the banner ads are for longboards.... strange

Yeah, they have been around for a while, but in the 50 lb range. Someone here posted here on the new generation versions that were using lightweight lithium batteries and after a bit of research I found myself the owner of one this spring. Greatest thing ever. The powered version I find much safer than my old regular board as it has brakes, everything isn't about holding speed anymore, and I can just hold my foot position like a snowboard.

"everything isn't about holding speed anymore, and I can just hold my foot position like a snowboard."

Interesting observation. Fellow longboarder here.  I find the sketchiest situations are when I have accelerate in traffic and sorta lose my footing.  This makes me unbalanced and stops forward progress.  I'm gonna look into these.

EDIT: Just did.  Whoa, they aren't cheap.

Nope, but compared to anything motorcycle related (which is what I was used to) it's not much, especially when there is no ongoing costs. Pretty small change even compared to what some here spend on bicycles. And the surfing feeling it gives you is just awesome. I parked my motorcycle and bicycle for the summer, hardly even drove my car.

Eyeballing the new rough terrain version now, which is more money yet:

Then me and the gf could explore the city together.

Awesome! Interested in your thoughts on it.

It's different, probably more like snowboarding yet, as you can really angle the deck. Seems to accelerate slower than the other one, but the air filled wheels ride so much smoother it's a more relaxing ride. Plus you don't have to worry about rough pavement, rocks, twigs, etc. Took it across the grass yesterday, unheard of with a regular board.

Otherwise, a bit more motor noise but still fairly quiet. With no obvious battery or means of propulsion it puzzles bystanders. Construction is very sleek. Weight is somewhat heavier, but not much, 22 lbs vs 18.

Moving at the end of the month and will be having a much longer commute so will see how it handles it.

This is pretty cool.

How do you control the speed and how steep of a hill can it go up?

I'm pretty sure to stop, all you do is crash into a parked car or oncoming traffic.  At least that's the way they show it on all the videos I see!   :rofl2:
