Please...someone tell me that this is a concept vehicle and not production worthy.

Reminds me of the Subaru front end mishap :

Well, it has been a while since the Aztek.  I guess we were due.

While I agree it looks awful at least Jeep chose not to produce just another cookie cutter jelly bean shape. I guess you  have to give them credit for trying if nothing else.  :-\
So, why can't the Germans make electronics work in cars?

Just because it's different it does not mean it's good.

The styling is growing in me. I just wish that the overall shape was more boxy like the original Cherokee.

I think it is mainly the unorthodox headlight design that is not exactly speaking to me.   If they could tweak that specific issue, the rounded grill is not independently offensive to my eyes.

If it wasn't under the Jeep brand or using the Cherokee name, it likely wouldn't be as controversial. Most people who care, like the stodgy old styling Jeeps typically had.

I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

Jeep in the U.S. is asking a $4,500 premium for the diesel engine, which makes it $2,305 more expensive than the Hemi V8. A bit of quick math using national average fuel prices reveals that the Ecodiesel will pay for itself relative to the Hemi V8 in about 35,000 miles (56327.04 Km). Guess you really have to want the 30lbs of extra torque.

That's a pretty quick return actually. If you plan on towing then the diesel sounds like a no brainer. If not then the base Pentastar is probably more than sufficient.

My problem with it is that Jeep can do a very good looking 4 door SUV, this thing looks like it fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch face first on the way down. The fact that they neutered the powertrain irks me as well, should have stuck with Liberty, this is not a Cherokee....at all.....even a little. Historic Cherokees include:

Why ruin a perfectly good name with this monstrosity??
Keep the change you filthy animal.

I have a feeling that if internet message boards had been around for the introduction of the XJ people would have been saying the exact same thing.

Unibody? No optional V8? GTFO! The Cherokee name is ruined! :P

Actually the biggest problems with the earlier unibody XJs were the engines and transmissions. The 2.8V6, GM sourced, was a POS, the early(1987-1991) 4L I6 had a Renix fuel injection (french sourced from Renault) which was not really all that great and the transmissions attached to all of these were all pretty bad. By the time that the new millennium rolled around Jeep had the XJ down to a science. Strengthened unibody, high pinion axles, NP231 and NP242 transfer cases a decently strong Chrysler 8.25" rear end. They were simple to work on, cheap to fix, would handle a beating, they had huge aftermarket support and there are lots of people who can tell you whats wrong with it from 50 feet out they know the vehicle so well.

I don't mind the front look except for the tiny headlights.  Larger headlights would go a long way with this redesign, IMO.

I think this car should not bare the name 'Cherokee' though.  This is too big of a departure from its predecessors.

wrong car. this is the cherokee, not the grand cherokee...

this one will have the newer 3.2 pentastar engine and a million gear automatic... ok, not a million, but a nine speed.

I like the idea of having lots of ratios to pick from but Im thinking in hilly/mountainous terrain that little bastard would be hunting like a MOFO.
