Smart Electric
« on: January 23, 2013, 06:59:42 am »
Looks like a very interesting package but it was launched and then cancelled a year ago.

What was wrong and did they do?

In any case, once the electric car rebate in Ontario is applied, the cost falls under $20k which makes it pretty appealing.

Cheers,
John M.

Just bought one yesterday.  $23K all in with dealer handling Ontario EV rebate.  I upgraded to Brabus exterior / rims, and clear roof.

Wikipedia tells me that there were a few variations of the Smart Electric.  The 2013 is an all new battery and motor developed to improve range and performance.

I was impressed with my experience on the test drive yesterday and just had to buy it.  Waiting till November for "allocation" / delivery.   (like a few dozens others according to the dealer).

It's very smart of them to offer a battery lease option.

I've been driving my new 2014 Smart Electric for the past few days and put 200km on the car.
Love it!

Lots of positive comments, and a lot of amazed passengers when I give test drives...

Pictures would be nice and a full review when you have a chance. Range issues will be fun to test as winter creeps in.

What numbers are they pushing now for range? And what you are actually getting will be nice to find out. For the city I think it's a perfect choice and could see one in our driveway down the road.

Easily obtaining >100km on a single charge while driving with heated seats on for half of that time.   I am giving lots of spirited demo's, so in no way am I taking it easy.

I picked the black with silver exterior, and red and black interior.  My wife loves the combination and far prefers it over the demonstrator car (green and white) we tested 9 months ago now....

^Cool car.  I like it!

With the big rebate offered in Ontario...this would make it a good buy IMO.

Smart ED is selling well now that is it available widely.

http://insideevs.com/april-plug-sales-20-gains-led-surging-toyota-prius-phv/

Quote
Winning the “B Division” – something we call the group of vehicles after the big 6 EVs who duke it out for top spot every month (mostly a mix of low run and regional compliance cars for the most part), was the smart ED with an amazing 203 units sold.

The smart ED sales were “amazing” in April not just because it is a tiny 2 seat EV with limited available inventory, but because 20% of all the smarts sold – gas or otherwise - were of the plug-in variety.  Expressed as revenue, almost 40% of the brand’s revenue comes via the plug.

The Smart EV is appealing in that it has none of the previous poorly made Mercedes transmission or turbo components.  Unfortunately for us, Alberta will have rebates on EVs only after every single drop of oil has been drained from the province.  And maybe not even then.

smart recorded a total of 280 vehicles sold throughout August, including 133 zero local-emission smart fortwo electric drive units. These results have yielded a year-to-date growth of 19.1% with 1,478 smart fortwos retailed so far in 2014.

Turns out 133 is a record for the largest number of pure electric vehicles of one make sold in one month in Canada/

must be more and more interest in EV's of late, as in checking on sales of the Leaf, its been in the triple digit range since May this year where prior to that it was only double digits with the high being 82 in March of 2013, now it hit 117 in July of this year (113 in August).  It also seems to be the case in the US too.

There are some days that I think that a smaller commuter vehicle would do just fine for my 18Km jog to work. I

It seems that one of the best electric cars on the market (according to reviewers) is a car we can't get nor does the company want to sell them, claiming a loss.

The 500e. Whatever Marchionne claims about loss, it seems that the Chrysler put a lot of effort into the 500e just to meet minimum mandatory California state laws requiring zero emission vehicles.

Oddly enough. This is the only version of the 500 that currently appeals to me (baring a diesel version in awd... :rofl2:)

Say What....a tweaked version of whose of the shelf technology ? http://www.bosch-presse.de/presseforum/details.htm?txtID=6226&tk_id=108
