The FJ is a capable off-roader, but more vehicle than most drivers looking for foul-weather security need.

At least they're not spending any money on exterior designers since the 1st gen came out.
This is a definition of a "niche" vehicle.

Yup, definitely a niche vehicle - but certainly great within said niche. For a Japanese product it's also getting seriously long in the tooth, going into its 7th year and having undergone zero changes during its lifespan.

These will make for a really cool off road rigs ... in about 10 years when the values lower enough.

"The spare tire is mounted on the rear door, which swings open toward the curb (urban convenience) instead of toward the driver’s side (off-road convenience). "
Unless the picture is mirrored or this review was done on a drive-on-the-left-country vehicle, the rear door swings open AWAY from the curb (which is what makes sense in urban environments) instead of AWAY from the driver's side (driver convenience).
