Bike Tours and Beer are not typical topics covered on Bikerumor.com, but putting them together does pique our interest. The company behind them is actually called Beercycling, and they put on bike tours to get you “from pint A to pint B”.

2015 will be the fifth year of the beer themed cycling tours in Belgium and the Netherlands. The 9-day Trappist Challenge is in Belgium, and will ride 250 miles through the forests, mountain passes and rivers of the Belgian Ardennes. On the tour, they will visit the Trappist Monasteries that are the source of well-known beers Rochefort, Chimay and Orval.

They say its a difficult tour, with very hilly terrain and no rest days. This year’s tours are June 26th through July 4th and August 6th through August 14th. They also have multiple trips of Flanders in 4 and 10 day lengths. Tours are limited to 14-16 riders plus two guides to keep it personal and maintain a cohesive group while riding.

This looks like it would be a lot of fun. Too bad the costs of the tour + plane adds up quickly.

This one is closer and also has free beer.

Off to the shops, shopping for a Fat Bike. As I said to others a few time: "Don't wait till you're 80 to buy one, it will be too late.." Guess it applies to me too. Top of the list now: Specialized FatBoy.. Concensus around here is that you need 4.6" tires for the snow and this one has it. No suspension and target weight at 30 lbs or less. That will be my Christmas present; to me from me..  :D

Fack, now my hip swelled up after 30 minutes in the hot tub. So packed it with ice, drinking whiskey, and puffing on a cigar to help out. Still up for the night ride with Turbo Rob tho....

do it indeed!    I've got 3.6" tires, however the frame is built to fit up to 4.6"

Done! Bought the Specialized Fat Boy, Alu frame, carbon fork, 4.6" tires. 31.5 lbs but easy to get it to 30 by going tubeless and a couple of lightweight goodies laying around in my garage. Will pick it up at the shop this afternoon. Can't wait for the week end to ride it..  :D

Schweeeet.

I'll be very interested to hear your impressions of the ride-in-the-snow.

Here in Edmonton, I see fat-bikes way more in the last couple of years than in the past.  But, I mostly see them riding hard-pack snow where you don't need a fat-bike.

While intrigued, I have not bit-the-bullet since I'm more of a winter commuter and would rather go x-country skiing than biking for weekend recreation.  My route to work takes me both on-road and through some trails.  Except during  or a day-or-two after a big snowfall, most of the trails are hard-packed by dog-walkers.  I did go so far as to buy a new wheel-set last year with 2.3-inch  tires on a 35mm rim just for the snow-days... and is still OK for commuting.  But that is a far-cry from 4.5 inch tires on a 90mm rim.

So .. have a ton 'o fun and make sure to report back !

Fatbikes as the do it all bike.............

and, Specialized says bring the kids along:

check this out!
Now that the Specialized FatBoy is available in 20 & 24″ wheels, it’s OK for your kid to get fat this Christmas. If you thought wrapping a bike to put under the tree was hard, just wait until you need an entire roll of paper just to cover one tire. Yes, the child sized fat bikes will be available for Christmas provided you have the coin since both models sell for $1,000.

As for the riding? Little ripper Julien Markewitz proves that kids aboard the Fatboy should easily be able to have fun with Mom or Dad on a fat bike, or in this case – Mitch Ropelato. Just don’t roost people with snow or monster truck others’ sand castles, OK?

Check out the mini-me fat bike shredding next…
