I learned how to drive stick on a Tempo.
The Tempo did not have a engine RPM gauge.
You had to judge when to shift by the engine sound or maybe the warning light that told you to "shift-up".

What year was that? The '88 I had a tach and it was as basic as it could come.

I'm not sure of the model.
I drove the Tempo over 10 years ago but looking at wiki I think it may have been the previous generation to the '88.

All that I remembered was "great a manual transmission car without a tachometer, how am I supposed to know when to shift?"

My 1976 Honda Civic had a four speed manual and no tach.  You quickly learn to shift by feel and sound.

A friend of mine has a 2004 Echo Hatch 5spd manual with no tach.

I've driven the car a few times - I don't really notice the absence of a tach to be completely honest. I would prefer having one, however it is by no means a deal-breaker even on the purchase of a manual transmission car.

You don't need a tach to drive a manual.  Just ears.

When I was in university, my girlfriend had one.  My ONLY good memories of that car have NOTHING to do with the car itself.  :)

And you don't need a speedometer, just eyes.  Nice to have one though.
