Car Dash Cameras
« on: February 12, 2012, 03:12:12 pm »
I am interested in getting a car dash camera, for legal and safety reasons. There are apparently many accident scams in Toronto lately, where someone hits you purposely, then claims you hit them.  ::) >:(

Any thoughts? I am looking for one <$100.

That sucks!

I just got a GoPro. I don't know of any under $100, but with the new version of the GoPro out now, I know some are wanting to offload the first gen ones.

Or is there another class of cameras that exist?

P.S. if you don't want used, the GoPro 960 is the cheapest but I've seen videos and they look good. Think they're still over $150 bucks though...

Nice! Do you use the GoPro in your car for the same reasons?

The GoPro ones are on the high end, and are a bit too much for what I need. There are some really no-name cheap ones from China, however you get what you pay for.

I can't seem to open the eBay window on my Android completely, I'll take a look at home.

I actually bought the GoPro to film upcoming trips and test drives...

By the way, gpscity.ca has the best prices I've seen. I've ordered from them before and it is my number 1 place now for any GPS, camera, etc. stuff. Maybe check their website to see their selection too?

For under $100 you can try e-Bay for those made in China car cams.  I picked up a Creative HD cam for around $40 on sale a couple summers ago. It doesn't come with an automobile mount.

Do you mean this kind of scam?

:iagree: You also mean a situation like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otFOcR0TzMU

Apparently the guy travels the 401 on a regular basis and was having repeated not at fault insurance claims from the various morons who drive on that road who shouldn't be there.

I've thought about one for myself as well. If anything it would make for great video snapshots for the "Interesting Morons" section.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

It sure would have been tempting to have a little chat just outside of the camera's field of view.

Why are these scams proliferating?  No consequences.  The cops came and did nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  Scammers know they have carte blanche to try as often as they like, and even when caught red-handed, no one gives a crap.

Insurance companies just raise all our rates, so why should they bother?

There is no money or resources in Canada for police to fight economic crime, which this is.  No "robbery" involved, so they just move on.

A dash cam or a Louisville Slugger...
No place I'd rather be...

Let's say you record such scam. Can you then press fraud or extortion charges against such scumbag?
I'd obviously let him call the cops and have him state his version of the event first.

But do you have the time and money for that? Most people don't.

Given adequate resources I would run them into the ground. Actually, I would do something a little more drastic.. I didn't touch him Officer, he must've hit his nose against the wheel. ???

A local guy sells a VGA camera for $48... plug it into a 12V outlet and it automatically records whenever your car is on. A 720p version is $88.

If this person didn't have a dash camera, what do you think the insurance company would've ruled?

And someone in a local car club heard an interesting conversation by a guy doing an oil change on his car...

Hey, you could make money on that stuff.  ;) :pimp:

Well, the camera its not just for legal reasons. It could also be for fun too. :) Just another gadget for the car.

Another option is to buy a suction cup mount for a P&S camera/camcorder - but that'd be too large, and I don't think they record and loop, and the lens isn't wide.
