Withdrawal
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:00:54 pm »
Having spent 6+ months thinking about/shopping for a replacement for the SRX last year and then having to replace the Mini last September 2011 was a major car shopping year. The problem now is that now we are at least 27 months (ML is leased) away from needing to think about a new car.

Help! I think I may be suffering from car shopping withdrawal. :o

It's a never ending addiction. Welcome to car shoppers anon.   :rofl2:

Incidentally, my husband and I were in the TSX today, trying out a new GPS we got for our Euro and US driving trips later this year (to which we can import custom routes), and we were both thinking, "Why are selling this perfectly good (and reliable) car again??" It's not worth that much anymore, yet it's in great shape (we take very good care of it, and people comment it looks like new). He's not a car guy, so experiences no withdrawal symptoms). Looks like we'll be keeping it after all! (But my other baby is still coming later this year - because the prognosis for my illness is incurable ;D

You'll still be part of the TSX family.  ;D

IMO, use it as a winter vehicle, and put the M3 in storage.  :) I wouldn't want to drive a 414 HP, RWD performance vehicle in the winter.

I like car shopping...window car shopping that is.  :'(

That's because you're still young, young jedi. Young and responsible and not wasting money. Waiting for the right vehicle with Jedi restraint. ;D.

Yeah, we've been very lucky with this TSX... and yes, it's very good in winter. :)

Well the WRX sits most of the week either in my garage or at a manufacturers lot.  I only drive it either out of need once a week so it doesn't too long, or for 20 minutes between manufactures head offices once a week.  It is a great waste of money when we already also have my wife's car sitting in the driveway most days (we commute together).

Thinking of breaking the lease and getting some cheap, fun and reliable to drive from manu to manu each week or waiting until the lease runs out in 1.5 years and doing the same.

I do not understand why the manufactors even let you have a car,
I have only seen a couple of of your reviews
Or am I missing them  ???
Also on seen this on another forum, were the readership is very low, do not understand how they get cars to review

I have I think 5-6 on here now, two more are coming this week, two more are submitted and one review period is ending tomorrow.  Each vehicle we have a week for evaluation and I submit one each week.  Prior to the new year, all the vehicles I had out were for the autoTRADER Buyer's Guide for review and photos as well as for the facebook/google+/twitter pages.

In the Toronto area, there is far more access to press cars so it makes it easier to get your hands on one.  Plus, as much as he was panned in the GLI review, Jonathan has been doing this for quite a few years and has a lot of contacts who know him plus the autotrader/autos names carry a bit of weight (but not too, too much).  Now being accepted into AJAC I can gain access to more vehicles.

It is mostly a case of a lucky guy in the right place, at the right time.

Most do, yup.  That is how we were getting all our cars previously.  However, Mercedes does not and it is difficult with others like Audi.

So, you put up with reviews of Buicks, Jeeps and the like until you're a member of AJAC then. OK, then how does one become a member of AJAC?
Seems to be all the rage these days. ::)

That's it?!!!
So, say I'm a kid down the street who likes cars, enough that he starts his own blog and starts writing about cars he test drove (not sure that's possible, but his Mom or Dad could do it and he could tag along) while he goes to high school. As long as his supervisor (the Lot Manager where he works part time cleaning cars) puts in a good word for him he's on his way to being an AJAC member?

Not quite, there is a review board.  A lot jockey supervisor as you stated would not exactly count or carry much weight.  b. Two references from supervisors or colleagues or existing AJAC members. implies more a supervisor at a publication.  You may be the only 'automotive commentator' at a local newspaper so there would obviously be no AJAC members working there, but your editor of the paper could vouch for you.

I think the goal is to ensure anyone seriously involved in the industry can get in, but those who are just doing it on a whim cannot.  Like I said before, it used to be a lot harder to be accepted but they want to increase membership right now.
