Given the fuel economy numbers quoted it makes sense. Why go with the diesel (a higher priced fuel) if the FE benefits don't warrant it?

Note that this is only in NA and only the 335D. The mainstream BMW 3-er diesels in the EU will continue.

I always thought the 335D was a mistake. If they'd brought the 320d they would have sold a bunch.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

yeah, but that would actually make sense!!  why try and sell reasonably priced and capable diesel, when they can try the expensive one and fail then say they tried, right?  ;)

I'd like to see the 1 series five door hatch with the diesel options offered here.

I think this would be a very cool entry level BMW. I saw several when I was in Bermuda last fall and they look pretty nice.

Perhaps. I was behind a new Golf diesel in traffic today and I could smell...diesel.

Did the BMW diesel engine weigh more than the gassers? Typically an oil burner will weigh more. That can't help the driving dynamics.

that's conjecture.  last statement from bmw usa and bmw canada is a diesel will be coming.    i agree the active 3 will replace the 335d.  i think the 335d won't be built for any market since the 320i/328i are faster and match the 335d mpg.  after chatting with a bmw canada rep,  i firmly believe a 320d will be coming.......maybe as a 2013 model?  they are already producing it in europe.  i could see them putting it in the x1, x3 and possibly the 5 series.   it still has loads of torque.

Answering my own question. From BMW's own website I compared the curb weights of the 328, 335 and 335d (all auto tran)

328 = 1555 kg
335 = 1635 kg
335d= 1735 kg

So the diesel is 180 kg (396 lbs) heavier than the 328. I bet most of this is the engine differences so this can't help the handling feel.

Here's a good link.   http://green.autoblog.com/2012/02/07/bmw-nixing-335d-in-favor-of-new-3-series-hybrid/ sounds like BMW regards the 335d as redundant if the 320/328 match it's performance numbers.  They will probably go for the 320d to up their overall mpg rating.  I wish they would just get it over with and announce it.

The 335d is defunct.

The 3 series hybrid is coming for model year 2013.
