Well, I guess I will be doing preliminary test-drives of everything.  :)  Forester is a clear favourite, but I will give all the others their due as well.

Speaking of which, does anyone use a notes template of some kind to stay organized?  I want to be able to remember what I drove and jot down some thoughts.  I might draw up an Excel spreadsheet to make a database of sorts.

Do you have an iPhone/iPad or Android phone?  There's a free app for the iPhone/iPad/Android/Windows/Mac called EverNote that let's you capture text, audio notes and photos.  Notes entered are sync'd across devices.

It doesn't support templates, but you can take audio notes and pictures while on test drives with your mobile device and edit these on a PC later.  The free version of the mobile apps require network access to view notes.

That's okay - the world has more than enough i-Weenies.  :hide:

I don't go all spreadsheet-fancy, I just make a list of the categories that matter to me most, with space to write comments underneath.

Why? You'll remember which one you liked more. Just go with that.

My spreadsheet is simple.

Column A: Make and Model
Column B: Enjoyment/Fit to lifestyle (1-10)
Column C: Price

I picked the Escape for its value proposition.
If reliability is a top requirement I'd say go Rav4.

How about a manual 2008 AWD Grand Viagra dirt cheap?

My sister drives her 4x4 Ranger through some of the nastiest mud / hills near Bancroft. That might be worth considering as well.

The ride may be too stiff on that one.

I had an Escape for a month in 2009. I liked it quite well. The 6 speed and 240hp V6 worked much better than the old 4 speed.

A couple of friends have Outlanders and both love them. Lots of space in the back, and the tailgate arrangement is very handy.

No manuals.  My lousy left knee has a tough time with that now, especially in busy traffic.
